this, yes
One thing that is true in this age of "AI" is that authenticity is going to be prized more than ever before. A single hand-scrawled sign is going have more impact than the smoothest "AI" image because the people seeing it knows it comes from someone's brain, not a tuned algorithm.

A new angle on the endless AI-generated scams currently directed at writers. Today's effort claimed to be from Goodreads, wanting to include my books in a 2026 Reading Challenge. I contacted Goodreads direct and got confirmation this was nothing to do with them, as I had suspected. Shared for info.

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are NOUNS when you stress the FIRST syllable, but VERBS when you stress the SECOND syllable.

A detailed look at what authors (and publishers) may actually receive from the Anthropic settlement. A lot depends on how many claims are filed; based on what I see in the list of eligible works, my guess is that many works will go unclaimed www.authorsalliance.org/2025/12/19/b...
Back-of-the-Envelope Math on What Payouts We May See in the Bartz v. Anthropic Settlement
Now that the Bartz settlement has passed some initial judicial hurdles and is moving along, with important deadlines approaching (opt-out and objections are due January 15), we thought it was worth…

Back in the summer, we visited the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. One of our stops was the Niagara Parks Power Station (there's an impressive underground tunnel to the falls) and its Nikola Tesla exhibit. This quote — which I hadn't heard before — stuck with me. Where would we be without books?

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 209:
Not all writing needs to “lead somewhere.” Joy is a valid end in itself. So is practice: everything you write makes you better writer.

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

I'm seeing the discourse happening right now, and I would like to gently remind everyone that libraries still exist.

I know! I know! It feels like all good things have been dismantled in this the year of our Lord 2025, but libraries are, in fact, still in existence.

Pulling just one quote from this excellent thread: "When all you get are nos, the story will be your yes."
I think one of the hardest things about being a career writer in traditional publishing is that writing attracts the neurodivergent brain while the variable reinforcement schedule punishes it. We are all the rat at the water bottle, waiting for the hit of cocaine. You get one win, and you need MORE.
