Had such a difficult week - had to have my boy cat put to sleep due to a very aggressive facial tumour. He had a great 15 years though 💔

Also, your "agitated" patient.

Are they delirious due to infection, or are they in pain and unable to communicate it clearly?

Give simple analgesia if they haven't had any before running to sedatives.

Analgesia FIRST. Always.
#MedSky
I feel like I shouldn't have to keep saying this, but it astonishes me that it keeps happening:

If your patient has a very obvious, painful, traumatic injury, give them analgesia. Give them proper doses & give it early.

Yes, even if they aren't screaming.

Don't let people suffer quietly.

GMC Workforce Report

Some of the most challenging aspects of this report are the low numbers of Doctors completing Foundation Year 2 who enter directly into training programs, now representing just 1 in 4 (25%) down from 2 in 3 (67%) in 2012.

A new study in PNAS (N>20k) confirms women’s pain is taken less seriously than that of men, with women being less likely to receive pain meds and waiting 30 minutes longer to be seen in the ED.

Sadly, the same reasons we treat women poorly in our society translate to how we treat women patients.

Belonging. Inclusion. What does that mean in practice? It’s including people of different background in your conversations. It’s not judging on skin colour, hair, ability, accent & assuming this person is ‘less than’ your expectation. It’s a welcome, a smile, a how are you? Not who or what are you.

This is completely astonishing and will hopefully generate many potential targets for new therapies….

Finally saw the comet last night. Not a great picture but I couldn’t see the comet was there until I took it the photo and then the clouds came over shortly after and it was out of sight again!

I was expecting something much bigger and brighter…. still super excited though

Experienced #MedEd peeps… how common is it to make mistakes when teaching? I’ve made a couple, frustratingly getting confused with things I know. As an anxious, perfectionist type I’m feeling quite worried about it. Any advice?

My dad had an appointment with a neurosurgeon today…. Bit of a last minute appointment and they forgot to tell him where to go. Sounds like he used his initiative, followed signs for neurosurgery and ended up in the theatre corridor 😮🫣

Good riddance to the term ‘junior doctor’!

I wouldn’t mind some recognition that not all resident doctors are “young” though - *some* of us are older than the *some* of the consultants 😂 - maybe focus on experience as a doctor rather than age…

Clearly the government need to look carefully at their calculations for the winter fuel allowance - some pensioners, like my dad, gave it to charity as they didn’t need it, but I’ve met others who are worried they won’t cope without it.
