This is such a well-written piece by Xiao-Jing. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the latest ideas about population coding in the brain, mice vs monkeys, sensory vs prefrontal areas, and distributed processing vs functional specialization. Very accessible to non-experts.
Bifurcations—an underexplored concept in neuroscience—can help explain how small differences in neural circuits give rise to entirely novel functions, writes Xiao-Jing Wang.

From Monkey Brains to Human Meaning
In this new Nature Communications study, Hartle, Kishida, Sands, Montague, and colleagues recorded neurochemical activity from the caudate nucleus of patients with Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery. As the patients played a simple game deciding whether to accept fair or unfair offers of money, their brains revealed a molecular conversation in real time — one that distinguished the two diseases at the level of neurotransmitter signaling.
