Although I’m not a fan of NIH study sections on zoom, hanging out all day in comfy clothes with my dog is definitely a consolation prize. 🖤

Super happy for this help from NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli, getting the word out about our new study in PNAS, showing surprising new effects of synonymous codon substitutions on the expression of the gene "next door"!

I wish there was more credit to people who were the thin end of the wedge. The “First Black faculty in the University,” “First woman in the department,” “First blind person to get a doctorate in the institution,” and on and on. They made it easier for everyone to follow.

Jane Richardson's impact on protein science is amazing. Her development of ribbon diagrams, discussed here, is only ONE of her seminal contributions. ❤️

How Colorful Ribbon Diagrams Became the Face of Proteins | Quanta Magazine
Proteins are often visualized as cascades of curled ribbons and twisted strings, which both reveal and conceal the mess of atoms that make up these impossibly complex molecules.

It’s the 6th anniversary of the #9ReplyGuys twitter thread by @shrewshrew.bsky.social & me, categorizing misogynistic replies to reports of sexual harassment in STEM🧪.
These guys are still around, and these creepy rhetorical tactics are used for lots of things, so we recreated the thread over here.
Wow, it's the 5th anniversary of the #9ReplyGuys thread on Twitter, posted by me & @shrewshrew.bsky.social.

#WomenInSTEM who post about harassment & sexual misconduct get a lot of misogynistic replies.
We (a woman & a man in science) tried to categorize them.

Super proud of my @NotreDame colleague @CaraOcobock — knocking it out of the park on challenging long-held assumptions regarding gender roles. Go, Cara!!
🚨🧵 Growing up, my family made regular trips to Borders Books (yes, that still existed in my childhood). The first thing I did upon entering the story was run to the magazine section and check out the latest issue of @SciAm.

Congratulations to the winners of the Nobel prize! I hope their stories, particularly KK's, force us to confront the misogyny, bias and assumptions about "impact" and "excellence" that very likely limit the recognition of similar innovations that could improve our world.
