#OTD 1867, Marie Curie was born.

During WWI, Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, a generator, an X-ray machine and photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie also helped train 150 women as radiology technicians.

Very true. I hope my MP @drscottarthurmp.bsky.social will take this on board.
I know I too often look at things from an AI perspective, but I think all this is really relevant. I hope someone raises Unbound during the copyright bill debate in order to a) highlight the general conditions for UK writers, and b) show what happens when publishers and tech guys work together.

One of the few genuinely amusing parts of the whole Unbound/Boundless saga is that they had an active policy of trying to secure books written by authors wiith strong social media presences.

Which is a group you DEFINITELY don't want to screw over while then trying to sell a new grift.

The crowning of Ben Lomond. This image has taken me 6 years to get, it only happens twice a year and up to 5/4/25, the weather had defeated me in those 6 years but this weekend, I finally got something. Taken from Loch Ard, Scotland.

Thinking about getting a writing/sewing/knitting/birdwatching shed.
No power, just a shell with windows to use for 6 - 8 months of the year (with fingerless gloves when necessary).
Treadle sewing machine, binoculars, paper and pencil, book to read, ikea solar lights.
I like a bit of research!

Dear Bluesky. I wonder if you can help? I have 100 copies of this book, each of which I'm happy to send to anyone in the UK for £4 postage, plus a donation of your choice (however low). Please drop me an email with your address at hello@tom-cox.com if you'd like one. P.S. I promise it's not shit...

This is a generous offer, and it’s a great book.
I hope it finds a new home with a better publisher soon.
Joe doesn’t say this, but the book was longlisted for the 2020 Wainwright Prize.

And now, coffee and chocolate.

Today is TV moving day.
The clocks change tonight and I put the TV in a cupboard until October, when the nights draw in again.
This means it’s also vacuum under the sofas, wash the floors and rearrange the plants day. Wish me luck.
