It does some stuff well but needs constant supervision, and when it messes up, people often don’t know why or how. This makes it both worse and dangerous. I would not structure my economy out of this just as I wouldn’t allow an anonymous man to build my house with materials I’ve never heard of.

The reality is they NEED this to work outside of that use case and it barely does for most people. I am a lot more open to it than a lot of people I know because I actually like it when technology makes things better. But the flopsweat on people insisting this MUST work is awfully familiar.

This is all another big reason why I've been saying I think Riot misunderstood what a fighting game was capable of doing. I'm not saying you gotta sink money into it and operate at a loss because I don't think that's true, but you have to curb expectations and know what you're dealing with.

If casuals aren't playing online, they're not looking at the lifer who paid $50 for a Braum skin and having the thought "Oh that outfit is cool I want that." It's also just more money to make content for casuals so they'll do their dailies and log in regularly. It's all just bad for business.

Only the most hardcore of the hardcore can nolife a fighting game, and that's tough for F2P business. You also run into the issue of the thing I said where casuals don't like to play online, that's also bad for business because half of your advertising is getting people to look at skins.

Honestly I just think as much as many people say shit like "Fighting games need to catch up to the times and go F2P like all the big games are now," they're kinda just incompatible with the F2P model, and there's many reasons for that beyond just content.

Even if you really love a game, playing a fighting game for more than 1-2 hours is really hard to do because you're doing too much too quickly and the mental toll is felt. In League, that's potentially 2 games. Most people can go for way more than that, especially if they get a bad game.

A game of LoL can be very tense and exciting, but that match is also 20-50 minutes long with peaks and valleys. The downtime allows you to catch your breath and acclimate. Fighting games cram all that intensity and excitement into 5 minute games, and most are played 2 out of 3. It's exhausting.

F2P games inherently have to be lifestyle games, they want you to dedicate as much time as possible to them so that you are attached to the ecosystem and are more inclined to spend money on them. This works for games where you can lose a LOT of time to them while playing.
