so I guess my advice is pushing the line a bit further until you are comfortable with writing more and more noncanon

this is why I haven't been able to make a XIV OC yet even though I have a strong concept for one tbh.

That said, every act of making an OC or even using the game's characters is also an act of fanfiction and it is necessarily not canon compliant so it depends on where you draw the line I think
