The way "Addictiveness-is-everything" social media is breaking people and societies reminds me more and more of the Opium Wars

can add "one day you'll find yourself sending all your money to dropkicks like Andrew Tate in the hopes they'll like you. They don't, and never will, but they will use your money and unhappiness to buy fancy cars and clothes that they laugh at you in."
I just finished Recursion, by Blake Crouch. Or it finished me.

Solid recommend. Relevant to your interests.

(in movies, ARQ on Netflix gets a definitely worth the look).

No matter how late I was up doomscrolling, it was simply impossible to convince myself I couldn't spare ten minutes (heck, five minutes) for stretches and holds on the way to bed. And I felt better and slept better.

Plus knowing this, I'd almost always do a real workout earlier in the day.

Yeah. 100% me on both points.

I set myself two rules: the amazing one "never go to bed without *some* exercise".

and the merely very good one "Every plan starts right now. If I ever think 'I should move more', stand up then and move."

To the creepy side:
1. technical term used generically. That happens. Harping on it is irrelevant _at best_.

2. This response is all appropriate to elites abusing teens. Which is a horrific crime.

3. if he (or you) also abused minors, you will get all the increased response scale you could want.

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

I just think it’s long past time to set all sorts of new troubling precedents, most especially ones that involve shaming abusers and their enablers out of polite society and public life.
When Ravi Zacharias was post-humously acknowledged as a predator I petitioned my Alma mater to rescind his honorary degree, especially as I am a victim of abuse by a ministry partner of his.

That request was denied by the liberal female president because it would set a “troubling precedent”.

I'll get back to "party unity" as soon as the Senate Minority Leader tells us if he voted for the Democratic party nominee for mayor of his city.

I'm tired of party unity only ever running one way.

Is this a cry for help?

Cos I'm pretty confident that bskyers in your area are ready and willing to answer that call.

My brother is more advanced than me. He'd say "I did three good hard hours of work on that today. Didn't get it done. Maybe feels like no or little progress. But I put work in, and that's what will get me there. Make a note of where I'm at, and come back tomorrow."

I hope it is. or at this point, was. Or the next ten minutes will be.

But! Sometimes for me it just turns out now is not gonna happen. And its almost always better if I can give myself permission to put it down and go do something else for 30 mins / a few hours / the rest of the day.

Trump's White House & fawning hacks here don't really care about the 0.001% that the BBC gets wrong. They care about all the stuff it gets right.

and if I heard @volts.wtf right on the latest pod, next year there's a third spot up, so if Dems pick it up they will have a 3:2 majority.

(I have to imagine the pro-power-profits side will be a little more motivated to fight that one).
November 11, 2025 at 8:51 AM
it's _very_ cool. The power co will no longer simply dictate their own rules and prices with no oversight.

(Dems are still a minority, the power co will probly get its way. But no longer automatically and w/o oversight).

just looks like it doesn't fit option 2, because The Wire correctly recognises that "Rogue" means "will when given half an opportunity attempt to do their job or make a real difference, not just fill metrics."

Now, that might also be a good platform for eight primaries and some senate party leadership campaigns.

(when asked about the real harms to real people of shutdown and health care prices, that cynical voice said 'they're going to keep hurting people until you wrest power away').
November 10, 2025 at 7:31 AM
A cynical part of me has been thinking this would be a good time to get beaten on the shutdown. (Even) after Tuesday's election wins.

Thought being - if you fought hard, but couldn't bear the pain GOP was causing ppl. Good platform for midterms.
