Old and well-worn, but sturdy and lasting. They were around for more than eighty years, welcoming the footsteps of both German and Polish people. These small bridges between past and present always make my heart beat a lil’ bit faster.
Come walk with me on the tiles of the ”Recovered Territories”.

The Dutch traded live eels to London starting in the mid-15th C., & quickly won a monopoly on eel sales in the city.

How do we know?

Well...by the 16th C., English regulations started calling ALL eel sellers in the city "palingmen" from the Dutch word for eel: paling. 1/2

Good on him!
Lots of ways to be a man! Problems can lie in fitting into societal expectations of 'manliness', and men can be crap at dealing with that. I've never wanted to hurt myself, but many do, and a British man kills himself every two hours. It's why I support www.mensmindsmatter.org #InternationalMensDay

New discovery: A #bakery was unearthed in the Roman town of Sisapo, Spain. The town was part of a major economic center linked to mining in the Sierra Morena region. The bakery occupied a large complex of over 200 m² with five rooms, including a large circular oven, milling areas with stone ...🧵1/2

This is interesting
Sharing this a lot tonight - donated items in disaster only make things worse (pretty much without exception and anywhere in the world). There is a long history of this going very wrong particularly after hurricanes www.theguardian.com/books/2023/m...
The big idea: in a disaster, bad help can be worse than no help at all
Emergency relief must be about money, not well-intentioned donations of goods

Similar to what I was thinking @samclark82.bsky.social
Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

Did you see this @peteblanchard.bsky.social ?
For the Germans it was initially with the artillery arm so served a very different purpose. The Germans operated light 75mm infantry guns at regimental level. The Stug III was an armoured take on the same tactical principle. Picture from Russia 1941, taken by my grandfather.

Jesus, take the (wh)eel!

Did you know that there were eels on the table at the Last Supper? Da Vinci's famous painting has a plate of grilled eel & oranges -- a popular local dish that Leonardo himself probably enjoyed.

The ingredients show up on one of his shopping lists! 1/2
