Builder, kayaker, lousy cook, atheist, anything water-related 🌊. Mostly irresponsible.
This is Murujuga National Park, site of the largest collection of rock art carvings in the world.

The oldest depiction of a human face anywhere in the world is HERE.

The LATEST dated specimens here are hundreds of years older than the Pyramids.

This is Gondwanalands history, encapsulated.🧵

Misinformation is probably one of the most significant weapons of mass destruction in the world today. It's impossible to know what is and isn't real any more, so we give up, and believe whatever makes us comfortable, becoming ever more polarised and angry, as a species.

Been humbled and amazed reading some of the local history across the Kimberleys on this trip, and the shameless exploitation of First Nations people.

The pearling industry in Broome was among the worst, with over 50 years of legalised blackbirding and indentured Malay & Koepang (Timorese) workers 🧵

The Kimberley beaches at low tide are alive, it's not just the sand bubbler crabs endlessly constructing their Sisyphean sculpture patterns before the next high tide.

Every other rock seems to harbour another animal making the most of their mini wet & dry seasons.

Mundoo Island is in the middle of The Coorong at the mouth of the Murray River, fresh water one side, salt water the other. Quite a unique environment, but also how cool must it be to witness and photograph a tiger snake catching fish in salt water? 😳

Haha, gotcha. Large language model AI is a tool for flattery and foolery, not for serious research. It lies, admits it lies, and makes up excuses like a card-carrying narcissist.

Today is World Sawfish Day.

There are only 5 species of these very unique critters in the world, ALL are highly endangered, and 4 of those 5 sub-species are unique to Australia - including the biggest ones, native to Martuwarra - the mighty Fitzroy River in WA's Kimberley. 🌏

The Wet season in the Kimberley is approaching fast. Huge electrical storms are building everywhere daily now, and the skies are dramatic.

1 am and it rolls across the dry flats, driving dust storms before it, lightning going in every direction, cloud to cloud, and upwards, which I've never seen.🧵

There's a network of campsites called Camping With Custodians across the north of Western Australia.

Staying on Country with its traditional custodians, observing first hand some of the oldest cultures in the world.

Today, at the gorgeous Lombadina community, it's been an eventful day. 🧵

This is Ardyaloon, on the saltwater country of the Bardi and Jarwi peoples, at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula 210km north of Broome WA.

It's hard to put into words how stunning this place is, and it is an incredible privilege to be graciously permitted to visit here. 🩵

The Dampier Peninsula north of Broome is deeply spiritual country for the Jabirr Jabirr people.

There are still taboo areas here that are off limits for ALL humans.

The fierce snake spirit Walmadan protects the James Price Point area, it just feels sensible to tread very lightly here🧵

The azure tides of Broome's Roebuck Bay in the Yawuru Nagulagun Marine Park expose over 170km² of mudflats at low tide.

This is the world's richest known intertidal wetland 🐦‍⬛

More than a third of Australia's total bird species list frequent this bay region, which is Ramsar-listed since 1991 🧵

Around 180km east of Marble Bar WA the Gregory Ranges rise. The east side of them is the start of the Great Sandy Desert. Daytime temperatures are around 40⁰ at the moment.

And just this side of the ranges,on the Oakover River, is a waterhole called Karuwayinya, on the country of the Nyamal people🧵

There is a deep waterhole in the Millstream National Park on the Fortescue River called Nhanggangunha.

Home of the Yindjibarndi peoples sacred Warlu serpent, this 3km long pool has a feature I've never seen before - in its entire 6km perimeter there is not ONE single metre of shallow bank.🧵

This is Minhthukundi, on the country of the Banjima people, in WA's Karijini National Park.

The spectacular Banded Iron Formation rock formations here look like some broadscale Salvador Dali landscape art project.

The cliff colours are equally stunning, even in 40⁰C heat.

This is Ngirribungunha, in the Karijini National Park WA, on land the Banjima people have lived on continuously for 20 000 years.

This oasis in the Pilbara landscape is incredible, the vegetation in the deep gorge in total contrast to the harsh spinifex country 80m above. 🧵
