All I know is that when Gunther Schuller did the Epitaph thing in '89, wch structurally & harmonically is fairly uncompromising, Marsalis was in the trumpet section & pretty enthusiastic abt it. The performance was filmed & here's the 1st bit (the rest is also on YT):
