My latest Short Read analysis for @icct.bsky.social on Malaysia's "Bangladeshi Militant Group" arrests reveals how amateur networks exploiting extremist branding for financial gain expose critical blind spots in counter-terrorism frameworks designed for ideological threats.

As a non-US citizen, I find the tone of some of the "a terrible thing happened - TO A US CITIZEN!!" coverage quite alienating.

Non-US citizens have rights. It's terrible that this happened regardless of their citizenship.

An excellent piece on a recent school attack in Malaysia
What did Bangkok's Siam Paragon mall shooting and Malaysia's Bandar Utama school stabbing incidents have in common?

Both were carried out by 14(M). What linked these two is memetic violence, inspired by online communities glorifying mass attacks and nihilism.

Very insightful piece about a recent school stabbing in Malaysia.

The boy's short manifesto made references to Colombine and other attackers.

This is an excellent thread on how US-centric online culture around school shooters is spreading around the world and can lead to weird copycats.
A recent school stabbing in Malaysia resulted in a girl's death. The attacker's note followed typical shooter manifesto patterns, inspired by US incidents. My analysis is controversial, but understanding these motivations is key to develop prevention measures.

Been thinking abt this analysis by Munira about the Bandar Utama 4 school stabber and one thing that didn't quite make relevant sense was why the kid called others "NPC". (This is a bloody excellent analysis btw!) (1/5)

I have long forsaken Western media, but reading posts here I gather that it is Israelis that have suffered, that Israelis have heartbroken families. Palestinians have none of that. If you haven’t yet made the switch to @aljazeera.com, TRT World, @thecontinent.org, it is time.

I also recall making a similar point about women in terrorism: women's motivation tended to be classified as based on personal grievances and experiences, while men's motivation tended to be described in purely political terms.
Very interesting observation here, and the terrorism nerd in me wonders if this specific pattern is reflected in how people talk about these 'hard to classify' cases (which is something we're all struggling with, admittedly).
From the sounds of things, though, they're using "personally motivated" in an obviously tendentious way — someone with mixed motivations on the left is deemed "politically motivated," while someone with similarly mixed motivations on the right is deemed "personally motivated." /1

The Global South has long realised that Israel is finished. So-called Western political intellectuals are the last to realize their own irrelevance—too busy navel-gazing to see the world moving on without them.

White people can move the needle if they want. Y'all got Jimmy Kimmel back on the air boycotting, you can throw some of that expendable income to support the vulnerable through mutual aid, you can make some moves against fascism instead of performatively bemoaning what you think doesn't affect you.
