"It may take time to prove you're right, but you have to stick to it."
- Fred Korematsu

Jailed for refusing to abide by FDR's Exec Order 9066, he took his case against internment all the way to the Supreme Court - and lost. Remember him on Korematsu Day, January 30th. 1/

Before I got a dog, I'd see people out walking their pups and staring at their phones. What a waste, I thought. You have 15 precious mins to spend outside with your little homie and you spend it scrolling?

Now that I have a dog...I still think that. Spend some time in the real world, people!

Dinosaurs
Given that apparently the Stranger Things finale was meh (idk, didn't watch it, just the scuttlebutt) and we're not that far removed from the disastrous GOT finale that retroactively made everyone have never cared about the show:

What's the *best* ending to a show you've ever seen? Quote/reply etc

Absolutely reprehensible that the Oakland City Council just approved a huge contract with this company.

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel, Disney Animated or Pixar.

(There are many but this one I grew up with thanks to my inappropriate aunt.)

A few months ago @thelocal.to got a promising pitch from a writer with bylines in whole bunch of reputable publications—The Cut, The Guardian, Dwell, Architectural Digest, etc. Then I started investigating. Here's a story about fabulists in journalism's AI slop era. thelocal.to/investigatin...
Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

Even if this were true, should the "paper of record" be publishing ironic puff pieces? And if you have to implicitly scold "Bluesky" for not recognizing it as such, is it accomplishing the goal of...what, exactly, being a smartass in on a joke that we're not? Just what we need more of in journalism.
The Nuzzi piece is an excellent realtime test of whether Bluesky can recognise an ironic writing style.

Imagine getting an expansion team and deciding to name it after your state's demonym.

Yeah we're the San Francisco Californians!

Root root for the New York New Yorkers!

Go, Philadelphia Pennsylvanians!

Texans is not a mascot, it's just a person. Basic-ass state.

Saw "One Battle After Another." (Very light spoilers follow.)

It deserves the raves and left me ponderin' all night. But this morning what came racing into my brain were the very last lines of the movie -- and how prescient they might very well become. #oakland
