Please understand that the only reason this has been released is because of the UCLA faculty association who filed a request and challenged the refusal in court. If you are a UC faculty member, join your FA!

The whataboutism on Gaza really rankles, especially for those of us who have spent our careers reporting on the crises Israel's defenders cynically invoke as so much worse than Gaza. I wrote about how it actually compares, and what the true toll may be. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/23/o...

the truth is that this isn't a theocracy and jesus isn't my fucking king
Chip Roy: "The truth is the marxist, radicals, and Islamists the Democratic Party promoted this weekend, they cannot handle the truth. The truth is that there is a king and that king is Jesus. And the president has been willing to say it, & Charlie Kirk was willing to say it & he got killed for it."

Informed and important--though depressing.
“Israel now controls about 53 per cent of Gaza, and there is no indication that it is going to leave,” Nathan Thrall, a former director at the International Crisis Group, said.
What Palestinians and Israelis Have Learned Since October 7th
Despite the ceasefire in Gaza, prospects for long-term peace seem worse than ever.

My primer on German cultural politics in the October issue of @thenation.com brings together stories first reported separately, but need to be understood in concert. It’s the companion piece to my text on the US art world. “Fascism repeats itself: first as antisemitism, then as anti-antisemitism.”
How Germany Silenced Its Artists to Support Israel
As Israel intensified its genocide in Gaza, Germany ramped up its long-simmering war on dissent, silencing Palestine solidarity while bolstering its own far right.

Last night, the ADL took down its "Glossary of antisemitism" which included an entry for the term "globalist," describing it as a far-right codeword for Jews.

Hours later, the official DHS account authors a post with a common far-right meme, saying that "globalists" will be denied entry to the US.

This is a fundamental point that 99% of higher-ed coverage, and 100% of immig coverage, have missed.
A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

Pleased to be part of this important collection with my essay "Lived Multidirectionality"--first in German and now back in its "native" English...
🥂It is always a particular pleasure to send off the proofs for a book. Now the English translation of "Erinnerungskämpe" is ready! It was particular difficult because events sind the German edition (4 weeks before Oct 7th 2023) made a whole new preface necessary.

What in God's name does access to "all UCLA staff, employees, facilities, documents, and data related to the agreement" mean?
These are the Trump Administration’s demands on UCLA, in addition to a 1.2 billion dollar fine, as reported by the LA Times today. I must note again that the Trump Administration’s attempt to use title vi to enforce conservative agenda items is flagrantly illegal.
