More research on the value of protected and standard cycleways...
Protected bike lanes have a near-magical ability to produce cyclists.

This new study of 28 US cities finds that census block groups w/protected bike lanes expanded bike commuting almost 2x faster than those w/standard bike lanes & >4x faster than those w/o new lanes.

These intersections in Florence are a perfect example of why transit priority is also, or even primarily, a problem of street design rather than technology.

The intersection on the left misses a pedestrian crossing due to a lack of refuge space needed to cut pedestrian crossings in multiple phases.

A few years ago "transport poverty" was just a niche academic concept.

Now the EU has published its recommendations on how to tackle it & a helpful data dashboard transport.ec.europa.eu/news-events/...

Transforming a car-dominated train station with one small project:
✓ Thousands of e-scooter/e-bike trips
✓ Hundreds of bikes parked (up from just one!)
✓ Public transport use increased
✓ 36.9 tonnes CO₂-eq emissions prevented

Partnerships + community = people-first spaces

E-bikes for everyone: 3 NZ trials show people will make the switch – with the right support
These pilot schemes suggest e-bikes can be popular even in non-riding communities. But easy access, infrastructure and local organisation are all vital.

Cool video for the traffic nerds from @ontariotrafficman.bsky.social

Amazing to see how many different light configs there are here. If no waiting vehicles/peds, a phase will be skipped.

Bonus phases too, e.g. if no waiting peds then turning cars may get green.

I recommend this, because it involves two VERY smart people, @volts.wtf and @humantransit.bsky.social, talking about a very important topic — better public transit in better cities.
Today on Volts: I talk with transit guru @humantransit.bsky.social about the state of public transit in the US -- which systems have recovered from Covid & which face a fiscal cliff; the best way to balance coverage & frequency; the tech bro fantasy of transit without strangers; bus myths; & more.
How is public transit doing in the US?
From Canada’s bus abundance to tech-bro transit fantasies, Jarrett Walker dismantles the myths and shows what an effective system really looks like.

Find someone who loves you as much as North American transit agencies love to give up the most important segment of a bus lane, the one just before the intersection, to honour the sacred right of cars to turn in every direction everywhere.
The 82nd Avenue Transit Project is projected to speed up bus service by up to 20% on 82nd between Clackamas Town Center and the Cully neighborhood.

We're exploring additional ways to keep buses moving around traffic, which could include business and transit lanes.
