It's embarrassing really. The Soviet empire collapses. Countries like Estonia & Czechia get to work and build functioning democracies with higher living standards, while Russia sinks in a swamp of its own making. And rather than looking what went wrong, the Russians whine "buhuhu we lost our empire"

Let’s start with digital feudalism. In medieval feudalism, peasants worked land they didn’t own, under rules they didn’t choose, for lords who profited from their labour.

Today, we work for attention, on platforms we don’t own, governed by algorithms we don’t control.

It is stunning to see how Meta illegally downloaded billions of pages of copyrighted books and articles from Russian pirate sites when training Llama 3. And not only that, but Meta also directly redistributed that copyrighted data to others:

Authoritarians exploit frustration with stagnant institutions, while disinformation fuels cynicism and disengagement. A stronger democracy isn’t just about defending it—it’s about making it work. That means tackling corruption, increasing transparency, and ensuring public input leads to real change.

One thing we have to be careful of is if we're going to tell young people the truth matters, and show them how to find the truth, we also need to make sure there's an impact from that, because otherwise it'll just drive the same cynicism and distrust that leads to conspiratorial thinking.
A meta analysis has found that
conspiracy beliefs tend to decrease slightly with age. In other words, young people are more susceptible to conspiracy beliefs. This is why we must embed long-term strategies ie critical thinking & analytical reasoning into school curriculum #Misinformation
Younger individuals more likely to endorse conspiracy beliefs
