Talking work in ways that don't feel like work is always a plus.
Managed to have lunch, talk some work, and take a walk around Anacortes with @monishaslc.bsky.social and Frank Drew’s today.

Reading Glacial Errata @colindickey.bsky.social today and my husband reminded me of the instability of the reference kilogram....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Prototype_of_the_Kilogram. In case you needed further evidence that there is no certainty in the world.

In plain language from M. Gessen's NYTimes column today: "The reason you should care about this is not that it could happen to you but that it is already happening to others. It is happening to people who, we claim, have rights just because we are human." Trans people and immigrants.

Why is it so important to go to rallies and protests?

Why is posting online important too?

Social consensus. We judge truth & the value of ideas somewhat based on social consensus. Seeing that others hold and idea and agree with us is powerful.

We need news reports to show the consensus too. 1/2
Stood Up for Science at the Seattle rally today.

Talked about how disinformation is the foundation of the anti-science and anti-education attacks. I plan to turn my remarks into a blog post.

Shout out and thanks to our Seattle organizers and the national team. Mostly early career scientists.

And....caturday 3: Emma and I (and by default, poor Frank) adopted this 3yo peach-n-cream boy, California refugee. Name to come when he's settled in enough that we have a better sense of him beyond SWEET (and stop fighting about calling him the Abiding Dude - Emma says no and I say yes).

Caturday, part 2....Last week, took care of my parents' cat, Villanelle (beauty + psychopathy). My father's feeding instructions: a prescribed variety of foods and snacks distributed across FOUR feeding times. I hope she doesn't take violent revenge for a week long "efficiency" detour.

Caturday part 1.....Here is our beloved Anna, the best cat I have ever had in my life thus far....she died last year at 17, and we will always miss her.

Feeling lucky, I am already doing all of these boycotts and, except for Amazon, have been doing them for years. Will def cut back my spending these coming months bc I am concerned about the economic & my eventual retirement & health care.

Sharing more townhall videos today because they’re giving me hope.

Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes.

You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment.

My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc.

I am losing my mind today about what is happening. I'm trying to avoid the academic response of "if I just read enough I will know what to do" (because it's not true). Trying to cope by creating an "end of the world playlist". What should be on there (aside from obv REM)?

A true joy to have a genuine old-school NYC subway conductor narrating our ride tonight, sounds like he’s gonna drop a fire mixtape. 🔥 “EXCLUSIVE! E Train running on the F tracks both ways! Five mics! You know what time it is! Stand clear the closing doors baby! New York GET ON THE TRAAAAIN!”

Well that's been amazing, and I give Sabrina Cartan the digital genius a lot of credit: 9,300 views on youtube and a whole lot more on FB bringing us to about 28,000 views for yesterday's event. Most of them live, but the video is available whereever whenever. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf_y...
