For me, I will remember Francis as the Pope who called the Holy Family Church in Gaza every day as the city, and even the church itself, was bombed by Israel.

Can’t recall ever weeping over the death of a world leader—not out of indifference, just distance. But waking up to the news of Pope Francis passing, I wept. He left this world when his moral clarity & courage are needed most. Thank your holiness for renewing my faith. You'll be sorely missed.🕊️

I shall never forget his visit to my Iraq. For three days it felt like things were OK! I keep remembering his visit and the time it snowed in Baghdad at random times as a therapy practice😭💔

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s Health Ministry said Sunday — a grim indicator of the conflict’s continued lethality less than a week since Israel shattered a nearly two-month-old ceasefire.

Gaza’s Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Experts say the official death toll is probably an undercount.

Even those who may be too young to remember a war whose death toll has horrified the world will live their days in its shadow after it eventually ends. Powerful images.
Out of Gaza
We photographed badly wounded Gazans who made it out for treatment. Many can think of little but the dead they left behind. “We wanted to go with them, too,” one child told us.

Have not seen much on here on Sudan, so I'm amplifying this horrific report that shows the number who are killed is higher than previously estimated.

Adding here other writing to read to understand this war that has displaced over 11 million people; the highest displacement crisis globally. 🧵
More than 61,000 dead in Khartoum state alone, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine's Sudan Research Group finds: 26,000 of them killed as a direct result of the violence. Leading cause of death across Sudan is preventable disease and starvation.
