It's utterly insane, but statistically probably unsurprising, that there was more than one Brown student who had previously experienced a mass school shooting, including one who was actually shot, @miatretta.bsky.social.

It doesn't have to be this way.
We sadly know Zoe Weissman because of Parkland. In fact, our families are so close, that she has been there for my wife and I after Parkland and helped with our foundation Orange Ribbons For Jaime.

America, are you ok with this?

We don’t have to live like this.

It’s a choice.

Every day we do nothing to restrict guns. Every day we claim it’s mental illness and not access. Every day we let them change the subject.

We don’t have to live like this.
It has been 13 years since the lives of 20 children and six educators were taken in minutes by a gunman armed with a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle and high-capacity magazines at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. Two other people were wounded. 🧵

Dear Politicians,
PLEASE do not use "thoughts and prayers" when commenting on the latest gun slaughter . It has lost its meaning and is code for we are powerless to help. We are sick to death of you not finding a way to ban assault weapons and strengthen gun laws.

As Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis stated in 1933; “We can have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, but we cannot have both.”

Today, at a time of unprecedented income & wealth inequality, his words ring truer than ever.

👇 Many Congress members are too old to have children exposed to lockdown drills and shootings. We must vote out anyone unwilling to value our children over our guns.

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

Tomorrow, Republicans have a chance to vote to prevent 24 million Americans’ premiums from spiking.

If they really care about affordability, this is the single easiest and most important vote to support. Somehow, I doubt they’ll do it.

There are students at Brown who already experienced a school shooting before…. It’s not like the reality this would happen never occurred to me, but the fact we now have a generation who are experiencing it more than once? I just cannot wrap my head around how we haven’t addressed this, ever.
At least two students who were on Brown’s campus last night have survived shootings before — in high school.

“People always think, well, it’ll never be me. .. And until I was shot in my school, I also thought the same thing.”
