This is a truly incredible thread. A magnum opus. Reposting mostly for myself…
Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired!

Read Pope Leo XIV's first homily as pope
During his homily, delivered in Italian, Leo XIV said that Christians must serve a world that is often hostile to their beliefs.

Watching from a different country, it's always been a bit of an eye roll when all the gun freaks in the US kept saying we need them to protect against a bad government and it's been made clear with all this shit is what a lot of us knew...it was really about "protecting against brown people" racism.

Will Americans stop telling the world how amazing their constitution is, now that it's been proven to be a farce?

Imagine even letting this idiot stand for public office 🤣

And don't forget the amendments. They use guns to kill kids but not to stop their corrupt government... 😑

Do you even attempt to understand how other nations feel when the US is threatening the stability of the entire globe?! It’s not all about you, and frankly that’s part of the problem. American exceptionalism. Racism. American imperialism. Why does the rest of the world need to understand the US?

So many in media are ill-equipped to interview officials about what’s happening because they begin with the presumption of legitimacy and don’t know enough about history or U.S. foreign policy to foment intelligent pushback and hold officials accountable.

"E-bikes and scooters displace 4x as much demand for oil as all of the EVs in the world"

And still no plans or incentives from our federal and provincial governments to help people choose bikes instead of cars. Quite the opposite, actually.

“Survey after survey has shown that business owners overestimate how many customers drive to their stores vs walking or biking. In a 2012 Los Angeles study, more than half of the store owners on the bike-laned part of the boulevard thought most of their customers drove. The actual number was 15%.”
I read all the studies on the economic impact of bike lanes. Here's what I learned.
Research proves that bike lanes are good for business. So why do so many stores and restaurants still oppose them?

“If you care about the bottom line, budgets & taxes, then you should care about urban biking, because it’s a money saver. It’s ironic when so-called fiscal conservatives attack biking, when their efforts just show a lack of understanding of math.” My interview with @modacitylife.com #CityMakingMath
Opinion: Why more urban cycling saves everyone money | Urbanized
The resulting benefits of a ‘car-less’ household are myriad, but few are as quantifiable as the money most people sink into a depreciating asset that sits unused for 95% of the time.

One of the biggest reasons why better cities are hard to achieve is the powerful proven psychology of “status quo bias.” No matter how bad an idea was in the first place, once it’s in place, our “loss aversion” means we will fight irrationally hard to protect it from any change to something better.

In case it's not obvious, the reason we'll never dig out of our climate crisis, is because municipalities intend to spend more than 100 times the budget they'd ever give for cycling, on an ecologically harmful project instead. One that encourages driving, and discourages low emission options.
