On behalf of the City of Hamilton, I extend my condolences to the victims, their loved ones, and to everyone impacted by this heartbreaking act of senseless violence. To Mayor Darryl Krakowka - as a fellow mayor, I know how deeply violence like this affects a community - in its schools, its workplaces, and around kitchen tables. Please know that Hamilton is thinking of you during this incredibly difficult time.

#HamOnt Please see my statement regarding decommissioning the ice plant at Stoney Creek Arena. “When I directed City Staff to prepare the 2026 budget, my instructions were clear: affordability for Hamiltonians is a priority, and the proposed budget must not compromise the services that residents rely on and deserve. The Draft Staff Proposed Budget had inappropriately imbedded within it the decommissioning of the ice plant at the Stoney Creek Arena. Contrary to my directive, this will have an impact on the families, teams, and community groups who use this arena, and that is unacceptable to me. Today, I have directed staff to ensure the ice plant at the Stoney Creek Arena remains included in the proposed 2026 budget, so that the arena can continue to serve the community. I sincerely thank the residents and community groups who reached out to my office to share their concerns. I also appreciate Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden, for highlighting the important role community recreation facilities play in people’s lives. I agree that Hamilton requires ongoing investment to meet the needs of our growing city. I welcome the opportunity to work with the Minister to ensure Hamilton is successful in obtaining funding from the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund. His interest in this matter makes it clear that ensuring our city’s facilities are well maintained and able to serve Hamiltonians now and, in the future, is something we can all agree on. Hamiltonians deserve nothing less.”
