Reposting the end of a very good thread on Canada’s Public Lending Right program (getting money from your book being in libraries) just to make reading through it easier, scroll up to the top!

It's weird to say, but my publisher (who's American) never told me to register for the public lending right

I found out via fellow Canadian authors back on old twitter. So if you know a Canadian with a book out in the past year, maybe tell them to go here?

it's definitely fine to be using gen AI in confidential contexts as long as you have a strict data policy internally and your agreement with the vendor protects your data though

okay I got my tom bihn bag and I had ordered one of their mystery bags with it and I would genuinely been happy with any wild assortment of colors or patterns bc I am gonna use it for travel but they did their best to match it to the purple bag I bought and I really appreciate that level of thought.

Today is the first day of Ramadan, the first day of Adar, Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras.

This means that for one reason or another, the majority of humans on the planet have a reason to eat fried food, and that is beautiful.
Ramadan Mubarak!

Not saying I think about the structural problems with A Song of Ice and Fire too much, but the other day I had a dream that 'The Winds of Winter' came out, and that it had an entirely new set of POV characters: historians trying to piece together how the war *really* ended a thousand years later.

kind of hating the package setup at the new place. I get home after the main office has closed and before security arrives.

I really wanted to travel internationally in my 40s but I'm starting to think I should renew my stupid annual pass bc the closest I'm getting to Greece in this economy is the food and wine festival at Epcot.

I was in my "laws should fucking mean things" bag today in class making my students research bad executive orders across party lines. I hate legal instruments being used in ways they shouldn't be used.

one of my most toxic opinions is that highly specialized and localized lawmaking is the behavior of medieval city-states and I don't know if we should really be trying to encourage that in our municipalities

Centuries-old immortal but also you just like, have a job. "Did you know Charlemagne?" No, man I was working on a boat for like a hundred years. "Did you meet Winston Churchill?" *why would I have met Winston Churchill*

there was a good bit in the Highlander TV show when his girlfriend finds out he's immortal and keeps asking him about famous historic figures and he has to be like, "yeah I didn't know that guy, I was in France then" and I think that's funny, too.
imagine if you were a vampire that lived for 100s of years but you just had a regular guy's memory. Like a normal person. "What was Venice like in the 14th century" Ahhh, I don't...I don't fucking remember. There was a guy, Vincenzo? Maybe that was the 15th century. Wait, did I live in Venice?
