#WalkPerspective. Here because we need safe walking, wheeling & cycling in Canadian cities. Posts by Martyn of Kjipuktuk/Halifax.
Municipalities in Canada are butchering Vision Zero to create watered down versions which use the lingo but not the methodology.
In HRM, the current per capita targets support overall increases in injury + fatal crashes.
Our next Transportation Standing Committee meeting is cancelled due to lack of agenda items. Our annual road safety report is presented to Council on Tuesday as an "information only" item

Another comparison, on pedestrian fatalities:

Canada averages 300 pedestrian fatalities a year (pop 41 mil) - 5% of us walk to work. 80% drive.

UK: 405 ped fatalities in 2023 (pop 70 mil), but with a huge proportion starting their trip by walking (34%), more transit use
You know what blows my mind? Calgary’s traffic fatality rate (1.9 per 100,000) is far closer to Tokyo than to Houston.

Edmonton too (2.2 per 100,000).

I don’t fully understand it, but there’s a surprisingly wide range of just how car-centric and dangerous a car-centric city can be.
I wondered whether the smaller cars and trucks, the many narrower streets, and the generally slower speeds I’m seeing in Tokyo mean a lower pedestrian injury/fatality rate than North American cities. So I looked it up. Tokyo: 1.04 fatalities/100,000 people. Houston: 15 fatalities/100,000 people.

Three fatal pedestrian crashes in a 24 hour period for Calgary, the 11th pedestrian fatality of this year.
There is rarely any focus on root causes, very evident from the video footage - extremely hazardous wide pedestrian crossings, no safety infrastructure.

RIP, another senior struck and killed.
In Canada when a pedestrian dies, the driver is introduced by police and media as the hero and helper - "stayed at the scene", "attempted to deliver aid"

Prior to that, the act itself is always the Vehicles doing

The @livewirecalgary.bsky.social article on the tragic death of a Taradale child by a driver brings up the notion of the removal of nearby speed humps as a contributing factor to excessive speed. City put in temporary bumps but removed before permanent goes in.🤔

The very regular senior pedestrian fatalities at intersections go almost unnoticed and acknowledged. Canadian signalized intersections in no way accommodate the safety needs of elderly pedestrians, especially left turns like here - which come from behind them

Miles has no appreciation the brilliant Urbanism of Winnipeg. Canada should be proud of ploughing freeway-sized stroads through the heard of its biggest central city. Don't listen to Miles, Winnipeg, you are a beautiful, walkable paradise, second only to Amsterdam.
Then we walked out of the station and came across...this. I have to say, the walking environment in downtown Winnipeg is maybe the worst we've seen in any major city outside of, like, Florida. Even the side streets were one-way racetracks!
