I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

conceding to far right ideas about the structure of society is conceding to a zero sum vision of the world, and more importantly giving voters a choice between two zero sum visions, where one is half hearted and the other is full throated. is it really a surprise then they choose the latter?

We don't need to "protect our borders"

Our biggest threat doesn't need to cross a border to harm us.

From a yacht, billionaires can move markets, pressure govs, dodge taxes & bankroll politicians to rewrite our laws.

The threat isn't the "outsider"

It's the concentrated power already inside.

The next taxonomy / ontology project?
We've been following deepfakes for the last 7 years. This article aims to shed additional light on the topic by:

1) creating a conceptual typology of deepfakes

2) coining new concepts like 'glowfakes' and 'fanfakes'

3) & analyzing deepfakes from the 2024 elections

@grailcenter.bsky.social
'Darkfakes,' 'Foefakes,' 'Fanfakes,' and 'Glowfakes': Morgan Wack, Christina Walker, Alena Birrer, Kaylyn Jackson Schiff, Daniel Schiff, and JP Messina systematically analyzed political deepfakes and developed a classification that categorizes them along key dimensions.

Whatever the case, I think a large part of it comes from the fact that so many Americans are consumer first, citizen second and where there is an active responsibility with being a citizen, consumers are passive and expect to be catered to.

I keep urging folks to read Goliath’s Curse by Luke Kemp because these conditions have repeatedly emerged across human history. Without robust restraints, dominance hierarchies, extreme inequality & bizarre mythologies can develop almost anywhere, creating severe societal strain & potential collapse
So many of the wealthiest among us have these insane apocalyptic and racist ideologies and are just completely shielded from any consequences. The accumulation of power is melting their brains. Taxing the bejesus out of the oligarchic class is a first step towards restoring reality.
