I’ve been really pleased with reports of the book working well in both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Just finished reading The Memory of '76 by @michaelhattem.bsky.social. Can't recommend it enough. I just loved it. The perfect book for right now. Go buy it, especially if you're not an academic historian but want an accessible read to help you understand this bizarre commemorative moment.

Looking forward to taking part in this event next week at Mount Vernon! Between now and then though, I’m off to Chicago this weekend for the equally estimable honor of officiating the wedding of two of my former Knox College students.

Waiting for the fireworks while reading Michael D. Hattem's "The Memory of '76: The Revolution in American History." So interesting to see how Americans have invoked the nation's founding to support various causes for the last 250 years. A great read! 🇺🇸🎆🦅

A lot of those young male Trump voters were in their teens in 2016. Many have never seen the Access Hollywood tape, the photos of him with Epstein, the comments about Ivanka on Howard Stern, etc…. Dems should be running ads of all those “greatest hits.”

I am thrilled to share that “The Memory of ‘76” is a finalist for the 2025 George Washington Book Prize! This is especially rewarding because I worked on that book for six years, three as a contingent faculty member and three with a non-faculty job.

This @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social video is absolutely INCREDIBLE. The numbers he cites, the strategy and results they produced — it’s the future. When have you heard *any* campaign talk about this, ever? (Video split in 2 to fit in Bluesky’s limits)

I contributed this article to a special issue of the Journal of the Early Republic on "Free State" slavery. It previews one of my book's principle interventions: the concept of hereditary term slavery during the age of gradual abolition.

It is a privilege to appear in print with my co-contributors.
