This person is a charlatan. Why is there so much uncritical coverage of this obvious nonsense? Where is the actual journalism?
A.I. is changing classrooms. We spoke to the co-founder of Alpha Schools about how her private K-12 schools are using A.I. to generate personalized lesson plans and enabling teachers to spend their time motivating rather than teaching students. nyti.ms/3JHIZub

New Substack about late night standup sets and the jokes I love from them. With late night in mortal peril, I want to celebrate the really outstanding tight fives it’s given us.

My first comic is @joshgondelman.Bsky.social and his 2018 Seth Meyers set.

Look how they frame the "ethics" of AI copyright infringement. Throwaway mention of infringement of copyrighted material. NO concern for the university's academics, writers and artists whose work was stolen to build these tools designed to replace them.
The University of Michigan is now claiming that students have an ‘ethical responsibility’ to use AI.

#PeoplePower works! The backlash has forced WeTransfer to remove the rights grabby clause 6.3. Here is the awful clause that was in the TOS last night, and what it is now. The AI and derivatives chunk of text is gone.

Well done everyone!

Here's a super-useful "starter pack" for these ideas (namely, that LLMs are an information-processing technology that can't think any more than a market or bureaucracy can, and we should listen to the people who already study these huge systems)

Holy cow this thread is good
Oh, this is a good topic!

There is an element of 'consent' to pitched battles, but it's not the old myth of generals agreeing to have a battle before tea time.

And to the question - a better Roman general would presumably have refused battle at a place like Cannae.

But let's talk about it. 1/
I don't think I really understand "pitched battle." It was once common that opposing armies agreed upon, or knowingly converged upon, a specified battleground?

Polybius says the Romans engaged at Cannae because of inexperience. Would experienced leaders ever agree to the same battle conditions?

Today's ACIP meeting is usually a time where experts come together to inform the future of vaccines. That is not what today will be. That is not what we can stand behind. The AAP will continue to recommend its own childhood vaccine schedule -- just as we have since the 1930s

A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”
Absurd we still need to go through this

I just got the digital+print (for students/educators) priced for $6. Print edition is going to my in-laws for some solidarity
Digital subscriptions are currently $5/year. Come on.
None of the big papers, for all their resources, has been covering the (incredibly stupid and vile) chaos that Musk and his strike-force of libertarian Beavises nearly as well as Wired. It's an extremely cheap subscription (and a very good print product as well) and I recommend it.
