My husband Raj Mankad won the Pulitzer Prize along with his editorial team Lisa Falkenberg, Sharon Steinman, and Leah Binkowitz for an incredible series of stories about stalled trains in Houston putting the lives of school children in danger.

It’s incredibly frustrating that our representative acquired grant funding for west Alabama street and the city is deciding it’s not going to build any bike lanes but will use the grant money to repave the street anyway. I just don’t see how this won’t make the city look like a terrible partner

Raj and I bumped into many favorite people watching Loretta Kovicic at the Mucky Duck Saturday night. Loretta's zeal for jumping into life and making it all her own is gorgeous.

I don't want to bring back smoking, but I want to bring back ashtrays. They were so marvelous. My dad had this blue cut crystal looking glass one that reminded me of the Cookie Monster's fancy grandma.

Today I Olga Tokarczuk's Nobel speech with my adult students. It is more difficult than what I usually give, I thought there would be haters. But her words, hanging on the idea of the tender narrator & a new kind of 4th person story, knocked everybody's socks off. It's a good read for right now.

I opened two open writing mornings at my studio and can't believe how much more writing I'm doing, and how much happier I feel. We talk 5 minute an hour, and write the rest. Community matters, even if you are all mostly ignoring each other and immersed in other worlds. Houstonians should come join.

One annoying thing about historical research is looking up how long it took to get from A to B in the US by train in 1880 and then looking it up now and realizing it was faster in 1880.
