Theresa May, in actual policy, was also to the left of Starmer on *immigration*. Though as Home Secretary under Cameron, she is directly responsible for the rhetoric and *trajectory* of increasingly repressive anti-migrant policy that has continued under all subsequent governments.
Theresa May, the buffoon of "Brexit means Brexit", was to the left of Keir Starmer on trans rights.

That's the kind of fact that mainstreaming bigotry forces us to recognise.
The ability of the far right to insist that their views - trans people are lying perverts, climate change is a hoax, immigrants are all thieving, raping scum - are necessarily legitimate & must be given a hearing is already a vast victory for forms of extremism beyond the pale not long ago.

A woman delivering the mail thanked me for doing ICE watch on Friday. Someone who works at the hospital stepped out for a cigarette in the snow this morning, asked me about my whistle and gratefully took a zine and whistle.

The level of normie involvement and investment in Chicago in what is essential a city-wide* decentralized grassroots mutual aid program of resistance to ICE/CBP — it is truly a remarkable inspiration in these otherwise awful times.

For context, $500K is 0.00005% of $1 Trillion, so if he were to pay the fine personally, this is the equivalent of someone on a $50K income being fined $2.50.

The UK Online Safety Act is doing great so far. For instance, I now need to let Bluesky violate my privacy in order to access my DMs, but can still access literal actual porn as easily as typing 'porn' into a web search. Definitely protecting minors here, good job, no notes.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

My latest is a love letter to Chicago. "I see you stumbling through the stubborn, awkward rhythm of showing up, again and again. I see you fighting alongside people who sometimes frustrate and confuse you, and defending neighbors you may have never met, because you know they’re all your people."

Our comrades in Sudan just fled their town after RSF forces advanced. Some of them were injured in the escape. We’re raising $2000 to help cover medical costs.

After reading the article, I would hazard to suggest that titling your essay with the position you mean to critique is a pretty dangerous strategy for a subscriber-locked publication.

(NB: I do not subscribe to NYT and I would never; you shouldn't either.)

Lecturer: Can anyone tell me what Watson and Crick discovered?

Me (sourly, in my head): Rosalind Franklin's notes.

Rosalind Franklin died at 37 of ovarian cancer attributed to radiation exposure from the methods she & her assistant used to photograph a cross-section of the DNA double helix.

Meanwhile, Watson won a Nobel off that work & survived to the ripe old age of 97 by simply: stealing those notes!

@vscode.dev Is there a way to turn the autocomplete suggestions *on* for code and *off* for comments, simultaneously? It seems to be very good at guessing what code I'm going for (and is less typo-prone than I am), but the autocomplete suggestions for comments are usually way off, & very distracting

This has been demonstrated to be a basic fact of migration over and over and over again. It's a centuries-old truism. But bigotry hates facts almost as much as it hates people.
