Reposting my recent fieldwork thread from Twitter so as to have Content. Posts/images from July. Incoming: lizards, science, beautiful Alpine vistas 🧵

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

ICE just shot another one of my neighbors. They had the person on the ground, being beaten by several agents, and then fired multiple shots. In front of the donut shop where we like to get donuts for our kids.

well well well look who’s afraid of memes now
CNN: DHS officials have come to FEMA staff and told them to limit the use of the word ice…they are worried that by posting something like, watch out for the ice, that it's going to become a meme….

Me: Huh there's fewer posts from Minnesota on the general strike day than I would have expected

Me a few hours later: Oh they're BUSY
It’s -9 degrees. Downtown Minneapolis is packed for the anti-ICE rally and the crowd keeps growing

Minnesota: Nice

Even more impressive when you remember that when Americans say -9º(F), they mean -23º(C)!

So once ice vehicles have been discovered and are being followed, they often become incapable of doing their sinister work.

This is why people risk their lives to tail federal agents, all over the twin cities and the suburbs.

Essentially, what stops abductions is when crowds outnumber the masked kidnappers. When people aggressively follow ICE with whistles and horns, crowds are ready to show up. If they show up fast enough, ICE leaves and a family is not broken. (People here understand the stakes).

Another question I came here with was: how effective are the whistles and honking? Does it stop abductions? And the answer is, surprisingly to my cynical self, yes, and often. I have talked to so many people who have successfully interrupted kidnappings.

This is all such a weird argument. Hitler sang the praises of the US genocide of indigenous peoples. Lots of things are like other things! The reason people reach for 'Gestapo' before 'slave patrols' is not for the relative aptness of the analogy but because of how much closer it is to living memory
This weird thing where people are like “ICE is not the Gestapo, they’re slave patrols” and then others are like “ICE is not slave patrols, they’re CPS“ and it’s like ok the guy in charge of ICE is dressing himself like a Nazi so yeah Gestapo but also fascists can learn from more than one thing!!!!!!

Hugely impressed by my sister-in-law, who had a baby *less than two weeks ago* and is now talking to me about how she wants to get involved in community support for migrant families, as ICE has recently been spotted just a few streets away from her.

it's never the crazy weird conspiracy theory weapons. they are poisoning you with toxins they are well-documented to have. they are beating you with ordinary sticks and shooting you with ordinary guns

the only conspiracy is how they gained legal immunity to do this
My group was able to recover a spent canister from a green smoke grenade in Minneapolis. We now confirm with physical evidence that it was a green signaling grenade.

Please don't spread rumors about hexachloroethane or nerve agents.

I've talked to people on the ground about the strike here tomorrow, and the single thing everyone brings up is just how shockingly wide the support for the strike is. Businesses that no one would have expected to support it are doing so.
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

I've never seen a population more united. If people can hold onto that unity, if people can accept that different people will have different ways of confronting fascism, if we can remind NGOs and orgs that they can join but not control the resistance, then, well, people here will write history.

It's genuinely a leaderless (or leaderful) movement, decentralized in a way that the state is absolutely unequipped to handle. There are a few basic skills involved, and so people teach each other those skills, and people are collectively refining them.

I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

In tears reading this story of people in Chicago figuring out how to mass produce whistles and sent A HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND of them across the country to help people resist ICE

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

Chicagoans send 150,000 whistles to cities besieged by federal immigration agents
On Friday, Emily Hilleren and Lauren Vega ferried a care package containing whistles and instructional zines to Minneapolis, the focus of the latest federal immigration action.

I know the real answer is "don't use chatGPT" but like, is there a way to make chatGPT not fuckin shine me up every time I ask it something? I don't need it to waste data centre resources complimenting how good my question is; I just want the answer.
