Kittenn1412's fave advice: Everyone knows a bedroom has four walls, a window, a closet, and a bed. To make a description interesting, describe what makes this room different. Let those descriptions serve other parts of the plot-- show something about the character who's bedroom it is, introduce things that will become relevant later, stuff like that. Readers are there for tension-- don't let seeking your own relief from the tension as a writer get between you and making a properly paced scene. Characters like to keep their secrets hidden, characters don't communicate like they've just gone to therapy, characters are flawed, and that can come between themselves and their own goals. If your character shouldn't want to talk about something, let them, work with it. Let your characters make mistakes. If they don't make mistakes, they'll be boring. Don't drag things forever to the point the reader gets frustrated, but as a writer you're going to reach that point first because writing takes longer than reading. In fanfiction, I find most cases of characters feeling inhuman is because they're speedrunning revelations that realistically they should be hesitating to share, and if they shared they would edit heavily or leave parts out, ect. A serialized chapter should have its own internal structure. Introduction, rising tension, and a high point of tension, and something that can pass for a resolution. It's hard to keep track of a story you're reading one chapter of every few weeks, writing your chapters to have strong internal structures keeps them memorable for your reader in isolation, not just as a part of a whole. I'm not talking a whole serialized problem of the week tv show structure here, we can be a little more fast and loose than that. But make sure that a chapter has an underlying connective tissue within itself and builds to a point of some sort. Each chapter being satisfying in isolation is the most effective way to keep readers coming back week-to-week.
