The T cell death was published by me in 2020. Only now has population-level immune harm been acknowledged, now in the BMJ in 2025. Not bad for a medical student at the time.

Some vaccines like COVID and flu don’t stop completely stop infection.

But they do reduce the risk of getting infected and greatly reduce severe illness risk.

They are still worth getting.

Since they are not 100% effective it’s also wise to add another layer of protection by wearing a mask.

I know some peeps have big stockpiles, but if you’re buying new respirators, remember head strap N95+ is typically more effective than ear loops (& some KN95 are poor quality—I recently saw a photo of someone in a too big & clearly loose one complaining of a recent Covid infection despite using it).
You wanna be TIGHT! 😷 A tight fitting respirator (carefully molded around the nose with a strong nose wire) provides a more effective seal and head straps usually do the best job (found in N95+*). If you must use ear loops, modify them: - add a tool that connects the loops behind your head - add beads to make the loops adjustable & pull them to tighten the fit - add knots to shorten the loops - add medical/wig tape to seal the edges of the mask on your face - add the Fix the Mask brace https://www.fixthemask.com If head straps won’t stay in place on your head/hair, wear a hat or hair band to give the strap something to cling to or use a barrette to secure strap to hair or, for long hair, use gathered hair to prop strap in place (e.g., bun, ponytail, braids). *The + means N95 isn’t the best available respirator. N99 & P100 protection is better. N95 should be the bare minimum protection in medical facilities/PPE standards.

Wearing respies meant that I did not miss a beat.

I was out and about swabbing COVID positive patients, and going supermarket shopping… not infected and not spreading anything.

Wearing masks is the opposite of shutting down. It’s incredibly empowering in the face of infectious disease.

We need more stories about us and our culture. You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. November walks in the PNW are so cleansing, especially when it's rainy. It's still fall, but you can feel winter coming.

To all the folks who are still wearing their respirator masks to avoid Covid, I'm with you. I wish the people who say they "know they probably should" wear a mask actually did.
