Berlin, Germany | from Bern, Switzerland
On Thursday, I was at @hertieschool.bsky.social to discuss how legacies of autocratic state-building derailed Weimar democracy.

Thank you to @ariannaornaghi.bsky.social, @markkayser.bsky.social and the entire PE community for your engagement, feedback, and probing questions!

With autocrats and other losers attacking Wikipedia, I have now set up a monthly donation to the Wikimedia foundation, for the price of a latte macchiato in Berlin-Mitte.

Wikipedia has flaws, but it remains an exceptional resource worth supporting in our era of rampant bullshittification.

The decimation of American academia continues unabated.

Again, Europe, if anyone is paying attention: This is a generational opportunity.

Do I have someone in my network who works with/knows someone at Emily's List, ideally in the United States, and would be willing to put me in touch for a research project?

Terrible decision. The prospect of rapid naturalization made moving to Germany very attractive.

A huge missed opportunity, especially as the US is desperate to kick out skilled people from abroad.

Does not surprise me at all that New York City is the place where a new anti-fascist politics that brings people together in real, off-line ways is born.

In the best tradition of Fiorello LaGuardia.
We finished #ZcavengerHunt around 6pm and waited in line for a little over an hour. This was a great way to spend the day. We finished it using public transport. We talked to some fun people in the line. It was nice to visit parts of the city I normally wouldn't go to and learn about past NYC mayors

Wild to check in on Bluesky once a day to see the Trump admin set American academia on fire, step by step by step
The White House is taking new steps to undermine every international student at our universities.

It has approved a new rule restricting student visas to 4 years max. That's not long enough for PhD students, or about half of undergrads, to finish their degree.

Likely to enter force within days.

Is Europe serious about wanting to close its tech/AI gap with the US?

The Trump admin is reviving its policies of harassing, insulting, and making life difficult for workers from abroad contributing to the US economy.

This would be a golden opportunity to poach that talent.

My sizzling hot take is that the Scholz chancellorship was not all that bad. Important achievements are clouded by a general sense of malaise that is disconnected from fundamentals.

There are several really significant achievements to show for! Off the top of my head:

Tammy Baldwin -- a decidedly progressive, lesbian senator -- wins reelection in Wisconsin, where Harris loses. That would appear to cut against the idea that "woke" is the problem.
I don’t think it’s the primary reason we lost the election but this woke stuff is very costly politically. Ironically, it is not inclusive, as it is confrontational, intolerant, and alienates much of the country.

It’s time to speak up and say we don’t want to do this anymore.
