THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files.

It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

hot take: this is not any better than getServerSideProps

direct db access in server components is great dx for hacky starters and then you’ll want to undo it more and more as your app grows and needs o11y/security/auth/caching etc

theres one killer app for RSCs - reducing js bundles. stick to that

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

If the election underscored anything about the internet, it was how far social media platforms had moved to the right. The change was an unintended consequence of a series of decisions made by some of the biggest social platforms nearly four years ago.
Election Reveals Right-Wing Shift of Social Media Platforms
If the election underscored anything about the internet, it was the ascendancy of social platforms for the right. That puts Democrats at a disadvantage.

Tax Justice UK say:

There are 55 billionaires in the UK.

A 1% wealth tax on them and the very richest could raise £22bn a year.

Enough to pay 276,000 nurses AND double dental funding in England, with change to spare.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

Bluesky is built to make social more like the Web again, so we will never suppress links. Link to your writing, your art, your personal site — this is the social internet, designed from the ground up to be open and interoperable.
Hard to describe as a journalist how grateful I am to have a text-based app that does not suppress hyperlinks. I don’t know if people realize exactly how hostile the corporate internet has gotten toward news.
