Just a dork that likes things.
Today, thanks to @highter.bsky.social, I learned that The Soft Boys' Album 'Underwater Moonlight' is fucking awesome. It's jangly, it's psychedelic, it's punky, and it's catchy as heeeeeelllllll.

"We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice."

Jerry Garcia's quote about liking licorice applies equally to the Dead and Souled American, I think.

My other obsession this week has been Winged Wheel. Hazy psychy vibes with some Mission of Burma chime. (@totalvibration.bsky.social I think you'll dig this)

That's very sweet of you to say! Maybe that's a thing I do one day? I'm sure I could find like, 2 other people who would be interested.

Vulture Feather is an excellent band for filling the Lungfish-shaped hole in our hearts. The guitarist/singer was in Wilderness as well, so plenty of those vibes too.

Been going through Lars' list this week for little hits of joy, and I've connected very strongly with a few of these:

The Ophelias - addictive dark pop
Monograf - doomy folk(ish) metal
Pastor Chris Congregation - what
M. Sage - ambient gorgeousness
It's Jan. 5, 2026, which means it's time for me to think about my favorite music of 2025.

The music I meant to write about (some mea culpa), some other year-end lists I published on NPR Music, my favorite guitar pedals and concerts.

I'd love to nod sagely at this but now I need to look up who Father Yod is. Sounds like a good wormhole to go down.

It really took me out of my surroundings. I was rapt.

I love going through your lists every year. So far The Ophelias have delighted me, Monograf has fired me up, and the West Virginia Snake Handler Revival has BROKEN MY BRAIN

I moved to SF in 1998 right after college, and some of my favorite shows ever were at Bottom of the Hill. Don Cab, Rumah Sakit, Camera Obscura, The Faint - that’s just off the top of my head. I loved that venue and it will be missed.
