I don't understand the fuss about Brigitte Bardot. Delphine Seyrig was vastly superior in every way.

Look, I appreciate the good intentions, but 1/ Tr*mp will not be impeached (any more than after his other impeachable offences: why is this one supposed to be different?), and 2/ he is not stopping at Venezuela.

The unpleasant part of having a dog is constantly being judged, not for anything the dog has done, but simply for having them at all. The level of prejudice against dog owners is not something for which I was prepared. The bigger the city, the worse it gets. And my dog is tiny, polite and friendly.

As Elaine Stritch famously said, I'm still here.
I'm so confused.
Either:
A - She lied.
or
B - We died and are in hell because he's still president?

My friends, old and new, were the best part of 2025. Some came and went, some came to stay, some have been around for a very long time, online or irl. Whatever happens in 2026, let's keep it up. You're the best.

Favourite crime scene: the exact spot in Rome where Benvenuto Cellini murdered a rival artist in 1534 (he was pardoned by the Pope).

Spookiest museum experience: the London Mithraeum. Not much to see in terms of actual archaeological remains, but the sound and light show does an excellent job of suggesting what the temple might have been like when it was in use.

I once spotted Cecilia Bartoli on the other side of the street. She was in a hurry and didn't notice me.
Please quote this with the time you didn’t interact with someone famous - eg one time I was in Cardiff the same weekend as Willem Dafoe (but I didn’t see him or even know he was there until he appeared on the telly later)
Please quote this with your major interactions with massive celebrities. eg “I was married to the pope for fifteen years”

Best wine bar experience: Porto, the Arco das Verdades.
The fine Portuguese wines were great, and so was the excellent company I was in. But nothing can beat this view.

Best opera production: Faust at the Opéra-Comique, directed by Denis Podalydès and conducted by Louis Langrée.
I have long held the now unpopular view that Faust is a major masterpiece, a belief utterly vindicated by this remarkable production of the original 1859 score, ...

The one truly remarkable thing about Bardot is how completely she managed to destroy her own reputation and spoil her legacy, such as it was.

My favourite novel of 2025: Elsa Morante, La Storia. (It came out in 1974, but I somehow managed not to read it until this year, and I have no idea why it took me so long.)

"The problem is that AI is a black box. It produces knowledge, but without necessarily deepening human understanding. We don’t really know how AI reaches its conclusions."

Er, no. It doesn't produce knowledge. That's the problem. We don't really know how the human brain works, either.

Since the Enlightenment, we’ve been making our own decisions. But now AI may be about to change that, says Joseph de Weck, a fellow with the Foreign Policy Research Institute
