If they are worried about the integrity of the art when you can switch layers on and off, I guarantee that retouch causes more inaccuracies than that ever could. If they want localization efficiency, forget anything with AI and just GIVE US THE LAYERED FILES THAT ALREADY EXIST.

How do we get Japanese publishers on-board with providing layered art files for manga? I feel certain that most artists themselves would be up for it, but there are so many steps along the line that stop it. We waste countless hours retouching art, hoping to get it right. It could be a single click.

The lettering in the new Mushishi is so good that in places it's almost as if the sfx had been bilingual from the beginning. Spectacular work from @kernedout.bsky.social on a delightful translation by my colleague Andres Oliver in a package edited by @magpon.bsky.social. This belongs on your shelf.
There's a new English release of Mushishi, lettered by Phil Christie (@kernedout.bsky.social). I adore how Urushibara-sensei utilizes texture in her art, and how the sound effects inherit that texture. Phil does an amazing job replicating that with subtitled SFX. Notes in alt text!
