Buckle up. This is going to make the 2008 mortgage crisis look like the good old days.

Recommend you read this ⬇️

But I'll say again, tax on dwelling size (internal area) not pp - more robust than market valuations
NEW: Reported plans to double tax rates on the top two council tax bands would cause huge distortions and unequal treatment between owners of expensive homes across England

One area where homes cost £500k would barely be touched

Why Council Tax Reform Is Fraught With Difficulty
New analysis shows why council tax reform is such a hard task for the government as it faces widespread calls for the system to be updated.

Sorry, but does Steve Reed really think the greens want to 'abolish borders'?
It comes across as he's either stirring the pot with lie/exaggeration, or he's been suckered by some social media numptys.
Not gonna comment on defense of landlords.
Not good look.

Talk of HMOs on #BBCPM No mention of the fact 'twas Tory LibDem coalition that placed limit of housing benefit on a single person under 35 at an HMO rate. Got that.
Low wage workers under 35 are expected to live in an HMO.
Of course HMOs are only "delivered" by private landlords

Want to make sure house price inflation continues, and people can pay over the odds?
Help to buy on new builds is the answer.
Want to fix broken system? Needs system rethink - Supply Side answers, not demand side.

Clearly Cons and Refrm think austerity was fine - guess they assume public happy to take care of themselves for eg healthcare, education, dentistry etc... (cause it's NEVER cuts for well off boomers - heaven forfend the Torygraph readers might have to contribute something).

Bring it on

Ideal if it works from objective measure eg size (internal area, plot size) adjusted to local market HP (post code district?)

Valuations or last sale variable and difficult and time consuming.
Any good data geek could come up with baseline.
Nothing but positivity for this idea

Progressive.

Better than a transactions tax, doesn't gum up the market.

Encourages downsizing.

Raises useful cash.

Even Osborne likes it.

Looking forward to paying it...

Take that land, 9 self build plots at £30k, council basic LDO for principle. How many regular people (not grand designers) would jump at chance to sort their own housing out.
Things are collapsing - time to try something new.

So that's Surrey done. Still greenbelt intense, but perhaps a bit less of the exceptionalism will be apparent in future local plans.
