The tragedy claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight United players and three officials, 68 years ago.

I can see a case for majoritarian preferential and double-ballot systems, though I prefer moderate forms of PR. But I really don't see what the intellectually respectable case, compatible with recent empirical evidence, for first-past-the-post is now. There was at least an argument to be made once.

Prioritising balance over objectivity is the most cowardly exercise that a news outlet or journalist can engage in.

'The evidence shows X, but the regime says Y - so it's impossible to know the truth.'

Lies should not be afforded the same respect and credibility as the evidence that exposes them.

Time to require Americans to carry proof of vaccination before allowing them to enter the UK.
Breaking News: Rejecting decades of science, the chair of the federal panel that recommends vaccines for Americans said that shots against polio and measles — and perhaps all diseases — should be optional. The vaccines are credited with preventing disability and millions of deaths worldwide.
Vaccine Panel Chair Says Polio and Other Shots Should Be Optional, Rejecting Decades of Science
Dr. Kirk Milhoan, a pediatric cardiologist who leads the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, said a person’s right to refuse a vaccine outweighed concerns about illness or death from infectious diseases.

A (male) nurse at my local hospital was recently struck off for unnecessary "intimate examinations" of young boys; the report didn't mention whether police are involved.

One of life’s ironies is that calls for democratising the Lords - of which I am all in favour, but which would make it more and not less powerful - tend to crop up when it starts making it harder for the Commons to get its way.

Good to see the Greens come out for increased defence spending and UK-built nuclear launch capacity.

When someone literally tells you they plan to do populism it's very much on you if you end up falling for it.
When we said NATO wasn't working we were derided.

When we said a nuclear weapons system relying on the US is dangerous we were called stupid.

The truth is the establishment are more interested in kissing US feet than keeping the UK safe.

It's time for a rethink.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

From a UK and wider European point of view: I might not love the failure to condemn a flagrant breach of international law (even though I shed no tears for Maduro), but I get the logic. The indefensible bit is our failure to make our defence spending and coordination match the reality of the new US.

One of my strongest beliefs is that just giving poor people more money is a massively underrated anti-poverty policy.
I work with people in poverty/debt. Yes, some have problems managing money: poor education, poor role modelling, poor mental health, poor coping skills, these can all play a part. But the real culprits are the triple whammy of high CoL, inadequate housing & low rates of benefits (esp LHA). 1/2

Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence

I really dislike this rhetoric. The Lords are doing their job, ie scrutinising a very controversial bill. If we're going to make this law, it must be done to the highest standards of scrutiny and oversight.
The House of Lords must not be allowed to block the clear and settled will of elected Members of Parliament

Those peers who’ve tabled countless wrecking amendments to the Assisted Dying Bill are bringing Parliament into disrepute and undermining the very fabric of our democracy

They must give way
Peers’ delay of assisted dying bill ‘could lead to constitutional crisis’
