Labour MP Brian Leishman: "The Government has surrendered to... the vile rhetoric of Reform. Does the Home Secretary not see that removing the legal obligation to support asylum seekers who will be otherwise destitute, is as far away from Labour Party principles and values as we can get?"

This is excellent news and long overdue.
We are grateful to the government for their support in ensuring that our beloved memorial is preserved. ❤️
NEWS: In a moving and poignant case study for modern heritage, the government has announced that the National Covid Memorial Wall in Lambeth will be permanently preserved, less than five years after its creation. Detailed feasibility studies will determine the best methods of ongoing conservation.

We should stop the boats because it's dangerous, and we should stop the scapegoating of immigrants because it's wrong and cruel.

Mahmood's diagnosis is correct. But instead of going aggressively after these "dark forces" with legislation and arrests, the government keeps appeasing and validating them.

Madness.

when I hear Starmer speak about immigration and race he's spitting in the face of the Labour voters I knew growing up in Manchester, who put themselves on the line against the National Front - and often the police - in the 1970s and 1980s.
Ultimately the vision of britain that starmer has is profoundly cynical, nasty and just not true. He thinks that abidicating his responsibility in showing that another option is maturity and doing the difficult thing, but he's literally just creating the hateful country he is so afraid of

The Prime Minister said in September that we are at a fork in the road. These asylum proposals suggest we have taken the wrong turning.

The idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong.

Excellent piece. This image from 6 July 2024 (by Simon Dawson) felt hugely reassuring precisely because we expected calm competence from Starmer, in contrast to his Tory predecessors.

It's hard to acknowledge that this confidence was misplaced.

The clever thing about going for stuff like the cycle for work scheme is it’s really noticeable, affects people with lots of media access and platforms, annoys green groups, and raises almost no revenue at the same time. Real win/win/win there.
