Excellent piece. This image from 6 July 2024 (by Simon Dawson) felt hugely reassuring precisely because we expected calm competence from Starmer, in contrast to his Tory predecessors.

It's hard to acknowledge that this confidence was misplaced.

Fury as EU treats Britain as if it were no longer a member of the EU.

Today I was reminded that, just 20 years after the end of the Second World War, 2 crewed spacecraft rendezvoused in low earth orbit. That was 60 years ago. Time is definitely not linear.

This should be required reading for Labour. It's often overlooked that FoM was v popular in the UK *when framed as a reciprocal right*, ie not conflated with immigration.

Just wondering if anything else happened after 2019 that might have impacted UK GDP.

Particularly daft given that FoM was pretty popular when framed (correctly) as a reciprocal right. Brexiters deliberately conflated it with immigration. See eg last Eurobarometer before we left the EU:

This last para is disingenuous & patronising.
1️⃣ discussion about rejoining the SM & CU does not "belong to the past". It's entirely relevant in the changed geopolitical reality
2️⃣ where did Labour's red lines come from? They're largely the same as May's, and those had no mandate
3️⃣ FoM is popular!

"Supporters of the agreement insist that freedom of movement is not on the table".

A reminder that FoM (i) was not on the EU ref ballot (ii) was actually v popular in the UK when framed as a reciprocal right (see Eurobarometer data)

Yes, because FoM was consistently supported by a majority of the UK public before brexit *when framed as a reciprocal right*, according to multiple Eurobarometer polls (largely ignored by pols & media who wanted to conflate FoM & immigration)
