One guy tried, unsuccessfully, to blow up a plane with a bomb in his sneakers, and everybody had to take off their shoes at the airport for the next 20 years.
Chatbots have a collective body count equal to Richard "The Night Stalker" Ramirez, and they're trying to put them in schools.
“ChatGPT started coaching Sam on how to take drugs, recover from them and plan further binges. It gave him specific doses of illegal substances, and in one chat, it wrote, ‘Hell yes—let’s go full trippy mode’” www.sfgate.com/tech/article...

So proud of our Encounter Nature app, 1200 species logged by users in the first year! Some you'd expect but some surprises too www.encounter-nature.com/features/qde... (we missed plants off this one, will have to do another)

And with regards to all this AI business, probably the same as last year: FOMO is STILL not a strategy. (Buy your laptop stickers here 👉 carefulindustries.teemill.com/collection/j...)

In my lovely old local pub, about to shut for the... 5th? 6th?.. time in just a few years because nobody can make it pay thanks to the costs of the brewery tie and their negligent maintenance. What a time to be alive, hurray for capitalism, a free market naturally leads to progress etc etc 🙄

Haven’t got a book deal at the moment. Hoping I’ll get one next year, but even if I never get another one, at least this book exists. I’d love you to read it. So much so that I’ll happily send you a link to a FREE Kindle edition if you want one:

Read both Careless People (META) and (most of) Empire of AI (OpenAI) recently and this is very clear from both. Major safety issues are repeatedly disregarded to put profit or internal politics ahead.
I think people underestimate how much of this is intentional. We see the internal docs leaked constantly showing the legal team will review something absolutely heinous and just go "ok ship it." Like internally these companies are aware of the massive risk, and just don't care.

I think I'm going to need to get off the internet until local Facebook groups WhatsApp groups and newspapers stop freaking out about Hemlock Water Dropwort roots washing up on a single beach as if it's some sort of monster. I thought we were saving HWD panic for spring at least.

I honestly don't know if I can bear to follow the rest of this test or series. This has been quite a depressing way to way up the last two days #theashes

Showing my Aussie partner Ghostwatch last night and trying to explain the fallout was quite a nostalgia trip. What a bizarre moment in time. There is a fascinating episode of viewer feedback show "Bite Back" where audience members are furious about the "hoax" www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUyh...

I do think/hope that there will be a point at which AI literacy will improve enough that people will be aware of its limitations for things like this? I mean, how many failed library trips getting the same response before it sinks in?

My favourite Christmas album (possibly, Emmylou Harris Light of the Stable and either of Sufjan Steven's are up there with a soft spot for some George Winston's Winter melancholy)
Happy 60th birthday to A Charlie Brown Christmas. As tradition dictates, the listening starts today. tidal.com/album/776751...

Tickled this morning to be on the west of the Isle of Wight in a grisly storm whilst friends on the east side have clear and calm skies. The West/East Wight divide is real.
