This paper claims to show the non-existence of MUBs in dimension 6 which would resolve a longstanding open problem. Has anyone looked into it?

They use Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg theorem to construct mutually orthogonal Latin squares from MUBs in any dimension (including 6).
Mutually Unbiased Bases and Orthogonal Latin Squares
In this paper, we prove that the existence of a complete set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in N-dimensional Hilbert space implies the existence of a complete set of mutually orthogonal Latin squar...

I dreamed of AI slop last night!

I was in my hometown and trying to take a photo of the house I grew up. But I pressed the wrong button on my phone and suddenly it overlayed the photo with an AI-generated image of camels and mountains with a waterfall as a backdrop. I was pissed about seeing this.

I published a new post on my rarely updated personal blog! It's a sequel of sorts to my Quanta coverage of the Busy Beaver game, focusing on a particularly fearsome Turing machine known by the awesome name Antihydra.
Why Busy Beaver Hunters Fear the Antihydra
In which I explore the biggest barrier in the busy beaver game. What is Antihydra, what is the Collatz conjecture, how are they connected, and what makes them so daunting?

The simplex algorithm is super efficient. 80 years of experience says it runs in linear time. Nobody can explain _why_ it is so fast.

We invented a new algorithm analysis framework to find out.
Beyond Smoothed Analysis: Analyzing the Simplex Method by the Book
Narrowing the gap between theory and practice is a longstanding goal of the algorithm analysis community. To further progress our understanding of how algorithms work in practice, we propose a new alg...

This (very long) thread is now complete! I really enjoyed this book, and have a lot of stuff to think about now. If you're interested in or worried about the measurement problem (how could you not be?) you should think about getting a copy!
I just got a copy of this new book from Emily Adlam (with whom I did my masters, so this is the first book I'm reading written by a former classmate!). I'm going to try the thing where I tweet about it as I go.
