San Francisco will have a new representative for the first time since like 2 years after the first registered internet domain names !!

It is wild to me that the leading city of the knowledge economy revolution has had the same representative throughout

“woke” is when you acknowledge that black people have contributed to the united states
Two panels commemorating the contribution of Black American soldiers towards the liberation of the Netherlands in World War Two have been quietly removed from a cemetery in Limburg. It follows a complaint by right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

I’ll keep pushing this line of analysis because I’m increasingly convinced the clearest path out of this mess is for Dems to adopt a relentless anti-corruption, anti-inequality, anti-oligarchy, pro-democracy platform. The Dem leadership hasn’t realized it yet, but they’re now a reform party.

Wow it turns out the entire country is not permanently reactionary because Trump won an election by 1.5%

Sam Zacher & I have a paper under review basically to this effect. Among Democrats, renters have distinct left preferences in candidates (e.g. Sanders) and housing reforms (broadly YIMBYism). We find less distinction among Dem renters and homeowners with national social policy prefs.

Democrats mostly campaign on economics.

In addition to @rachelporter.bsky.social's evidence, this is true for the national party's platforms and legislative priorities, and what Dem MCs tweet about, regardless of their district or if they are a Progressive!

centrists will tell you to your face that we all need to abandon identity issues, and focus on kitchen table issues instead and yet when a leftist candidate runs a generational campaign based on kitchen table issues, it's the centrists weaponizing identity politics to smear the leftist.

Can't help but compare their story about No Kings yesterday to the anti-immigration protests in London last month. "Large crowds" when it's millions of left to center ppl and "huge crowd" when its tens of thousands of rightwingers (not remotely similar mobilization even controlling for US vs UK pop)

Nationalism is wild. A Scottish acquaintance just insta posted abt being at a real life event commemorating English attacks in 1545. Like, my guy, that is a rather long time ago. A lot has happened with Scottish-English relations since, inc union bc Scotland was so bad at colonization by itself

Columbus is probably the single clearest example of the limits of the person of the times argument
The "man of his times" crowd always seem to forget that Columbus was arrested and tried by *the Spanish crown* for his cruelty toward Indigenous people.
Pretty sure I say this every Columbus Day, but getting hauled back to Spain for excessive brutality in 1500, just as the Inquisition was really getting fired up, is some genuinely Evil Guys Hall of Infamy material

California!!

Rare to feel political optimism, but CA is taking real action on housing affordability, its biggest issue, with #SB79.

Last time I was home, I could see clear evidence of the state’s recent zoning liberalization in my parents’ neighborhood. So good!
[VICTORY ALERT] Governor Newsom has signed SB 79, which will make it legal to build multi-family housing near high quality transit!
