EL PASO, Texas (AP) — FAA says it has lifted temporary closure of airspace over El Paso, Texas, and all flights to resume.

Twenty one years across military and government service and I’ve never, ever once seen this level of incompetence, unseriousness and stupidity. We’re truly in an amazing era.
The FAA has now abruptly reversed course and says the air space closure over El Paso has been lifted.

This can be read as the Pentagon refusing to deconflict airspace, so the FAA arguably is doing the right thing, though others who are more expert on this should weigh in. cc @faineg.bsky.social

Correct
If they shut down a major US city’s airspace for TEN DAYS to deal with some COTS drones carrying bags of drugs, it’s going to be one of the dumbest fucking own-goals imaginable. Which, ironically, makes this completely plausible.

“Airline sources told Reuters the grounding of flights was believed to be tied to the Pentagon's use of counterdrone technology to address Mexican drug cartels' use of drones of the U.S.-Mexico border.”

(Still odd, if true.)

If that’s the actual reason, this would be such a massive fucking overreaction

I’ll say this much: if there WAS a significant, credible threat to NatSec, I find it next to impossible a WARNO didn’t go out to US military personnel. Like that would be so fucking weird I can’t fathom it. And yet they got nothing.

So yeah. I dunno.
Re: El Paso, in order to do something like this (in a normal world) the intelligence community needs a significant, credible threat to National Security and personnel. Is there one? I dunno. I’m not in the IC anymore. But under this administration who fucking knows what’s going on.

Sounds like the military also had no warning about El Paso’s airspace. That’s….unusual. Also probably rules out a strike on Mexican territory.

Makes me wonder if we’re about to bomb Mexico

The FAA is closing the airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas for 10 days, grounding all flights to and from the airport, for “special security reasons."

The FAA's notice did not provide additional details.

When I was with 2/2 in Fallujah there was a guy with plainly visible white nationalist tattoos who very ironically was on our SS (scout sniper) team who would keep his own score.

Everyone fucking hated him. Marines didn’t do shit about it.
nothing will convince me shit like this isn't partly downstream from watching Bradley Cooper shoot an Iraqi kid with tears in his eyes

Can't really stress enough just how fucking bad it is that 2020 election deniers now have access to EXTREMELY sensitive intelligence reports. Like, this stuff is SCI. And POTUS is just giving it to people who I guarantee have no idea how to analyze it. I spent 20 years guarding this stuff.

I'm doing charity fundraising for National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition. We need to support both the Black community & the Trans community and I'm putting my money where my mouth is: I set a $2000 goal. If we hit the goal? I'm cutting my hair and donating the hair too.

There are multiple concerns when dealing with someone accessing TS/SCI material who doesn't understand it. Compromising numerous collection platforms is one. Another big concern here is using material the public won't be able to reference to peddle bullshit without any context.
I’m guessing the downside is exposing the methods and sources that will be revealed in those reports?
