I've read a couple of great books on the collapse of the British Car industry (British Leyland Motor Corporation 1968-2005 and The British Car Industry: Our Part in its downfall). It's staggering how these things are repeating themselves. It was a miracle BL sold anything at all.

Having worked in the US and UK for over a decade each in the tech industry, the main difference is managerial and executive competence.

My theory is that it's a consequence of the class system and public schools leading to a smaller talent pool. Plus, the confusing of 'leadership' and management.

As someone who works in the sector, it still amazes me that so many bad managers fail upwards. And, the ones who are on the ground making it all work, to the detriment of their health, hardly ever get the recognition & £ they deserve.
