The best that can be said about Starmer is that he is worthy but dull. In truth he is turning out to be dull without being worthy. His team need the bravery to target the very richest in the budget & to help people invest to cut their energy bills and CO2.

How the Chancellor can raise taxes without hurting working people - Andy Brown
Contrary to much expert opinion there are actually some relatively painless ways for the Chancellor to raise money. Unfortunately many of them have professional lobbying groups agitating against them.

On this day, 45 years ago, #Visage released their debut album "Visage" including their breakout hit "Fade To Grey".

Dan LeRoy for AllMusic wrote "this is the music that best represents the short-lived but always underrated #newromantic movement", calling it "a consistently fine creation".

It's astounding how much CO₂ we put into the atmosphere each year by burning fossil fuels.

For comparison, we all agree that plastic pollution is bad, but the mass of ALL THE PLASTIC humanity has ever produced is only 25% of the CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere in 2025.
1) Fossil fuel
Still no peak. Emissions are projected to increase by 1.1% in 2025, reaching 38.1 GtCO2. An all time high.

This is a key point that UK (and a lot of Joiners) don't get. They treat the EU like a sovereign country open to deals and big concessions. They do not appreciate it is an entity of laws and rules partly expressed via carefully constructed MS agreements. Hence the "UK is a special case" fallacy.

A historic turning point for clean heating in Europe: For the first time, in the first half of 2025 sales of heat pumps in Germany have surpassed those of gas boilers.

This is a big milestone, demonstrating that the transition away from fossil fuels in our buildings is not just a future ambition.
