Now that everyone is talking about Greenland and mutual defence in Europe... it's perhaps a good time to read my piece for @csds.bsky.social again: csds.vub.be/publication/...
Mutual Defence in the European Union? The Imperative of Article 42.7 in Case the United States Abandons European Defence - CSDS
When Europeans discuss mutual defence, they mostly think about NATO’s Article 5. The mutual assistance clause in the European Union (EU) treaties is often overlooked, but it deserves more attention.Eu...

Well worth your time (again).
Noting the current mood, I’ll re-share this piece I wrote back in February 2025 on European NATO without the USA. The points still stand firm despite developments.

Agreed. Not sure whether DC would prioritise NATO over Greenland?
These comments -- "Danish prime minister says a US takeover of Greenland would mark the end of NATO" -- are getting a lot of press... but, given the politics of DC today, I doubt they form the deterrent Danish leaders hope for. DNK needs a different line of argument. www.npr.org/2026/01/06/n...

Her comments came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed call for the strategic, mineral-rich Arctic island to come under U.S. control in the aftermath of the weekend military operation ...

This is your reminder to disconnect on weekends and do things that are good for you.

(Note: I went for a run & workout and was off-screen for two hours, didn’t follow Venezuela, won’t do this on the weekend, and I am almost certain it won’t harm me.)

Also goes for Macron, Merz, von der Leyen & Co.
Keir Starmer should condemn Trump’s illegal action in Venezuela.

Maduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator, but unlawful attacks like this make us all less safe.

Trump is giving a green light to the likes of Putin and Xi to attack other countries with impunity.

Also something I see in all my private conversations. Though I would add that threat perceptions in the political elites in Paris, London, and Berlin have significantly changed - just not among the publics.

One more in the euro area now. Also noteworthy that there were quite a lot of protests against the euro, but many of them note widely covered in Germany/ France/ UK (Deutschlandfunk had a good reporting on this earlier this week).

If you hadn't had a tiny moment of joy today, this fox will make your Friday better. And if you already had a great morning, the fox will make it even better.
Good morning to a fantastic 1st #Foxfriday in 2026. I met this guy on an early morning tour-and guess what? He looks very much like an injured adolescent fox we took care of a few years back. So glad to see him again-isn't he looking great? #foxoftheday.

I agree that the EU and the UK need a bolder approach to cooperation (and to swallow their pride, on both sides), but single market access for the UK vs. free movement to UK for Europeans seems a bit unbalanced to me...

I have a suggestion for you, @politico.eu: how about adding a list with "the future of Europe" or so, which broadens the focus a bit beyond government/ leadership and includes a few more people who are 1) young, 2) not men, and 3) not white? A bit more representative of European societies...
Earlier this month, we revealed our annual #POLITICO28 list of the people we predict will be shaking and shaping Europe in the year ahead.

I fully understand that Ukraine pushes for more - but I also doubt that there is anything (except perhaps a resource extraction agreement for the same time?) that could make the US agree?
