Vivian Maier was one of the greatest street photographers of all time.
In all the years I taught photography I always stressed the importance of narrative as well as the visual design elements needed to make an image sing.

Vivian was a genius storyteller.

Met Museum photo of an Ancient Egyptian artist’s painting of a swallow on a flake of limestone, dated to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, c. 1479-1458 BC. The sparrow stands in profile with head to the right. It is delicately painted with a pinkish body. The outline and details are highlighted in a reddish/brown pigment. It’s legs, eye, and beak are painted black. Limestone flake dimensions H. 6.6 cm x W. 10.6 cm. This may have been a practice drawing of the sparrow hieroglyph which was used for words meaning ‘small’, ‘poor’, or ‘bad’. Egyptian artisans who decorated tombs and temples made practice sketches on flakes of limestone which are known by egyptologists as ostraca (singular: ostracon). Sometimes the drawings were used as a template when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available for this purpose as by-products of the construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of ostraca were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations.

Sporty crow likes a trendy downward feather flurffle unbothered by posh pretensions of total coiffness. No, this hip crowster of today lets it all hang out with a chic blase attitude that tells the world "I'm free and I know it." With just a dash of fir tree pine-cone pinache. Oh yeah. Every season there's the moody crow waddling down the runway, clutching a plank of wood like a corvid lumberjack. Burly, surly, off to bed early, this crow can bench press your mother and swallow large rats whole without even a second thought. That look around the eyes--that's the knowing look of a crow that knows who they are. Oh la la, that's sexy. Goth crow doth hideth the head and frequent Dark Star Magick on the corner of Burnside and 8th, before ambling down to Grendel's Coffee House for a Bauhaus Special Blend. This is a feathery, leathery crow whose bashful side has a dark allure. Favorite author? Crowley, of course. Crows about town dress up in their slick, tailored tuxes, black tie, cummerbund, and tails, of course. Maybe there's a little saucy Je ne sais quoi to their penchant for mimicking chimney sweeps and playing ring around the rosy, but these two cheeky champs couldn't be more serious about their fashion sense. Swank is back, baby.

once a very gorgeous young social media manager asked for a "quick candid video" at an event and i watched her immediately, humanely delete it. i have the on-screen presence of an aging adjunct teaching over zoom for the first time. some of us were just meant for print!!!
