As previously mentioned, the first season of Luke and Joe was made in a movie studio management game. In this one, the in-game actor standing in for Luke at the end stormed off the lot before we got to his scene.

I was forced to re-load the previous save and get a trailer for this glorified extra.

Yet another true-adjacent story, Episode 1x02 of The Adventures of Luke and Joe is inspired by @bayareadata.press' brief but glorious career as a video game critic in the late '00s. It went pretty much just like this.

@ashmcgonigal.com did S1 in a 2005 movie studio management sim called The Movies, where you could actually make the movies for the fake studio and export them. Then we realized Peter Molyneux got the rights to anything we made with it so we switched.

The almost incoherent lyrics to the very generic country song was improvised by me, then pitched up later. I think I was making a comment about the state of the genre but it's possible I didn't feel like finding another singer.

I heard and heard and heard about this show, and am so glad I finally watched it!

As an epilogue, there are still beavers in the creek though I imagine the half-blind vandal isn't among them. They're also no longer evil; there's a whole organization to protect them and educate the public.

Gary was the pets and wildlife columnist for the Contra Costa Times, my hometown paper and first newsroom job, and a local celebrity. I read his column religiously as a kid and it was an honor to be his friend and go on insane adventures with him. I wish I'd convinced him to do a cameo in the show.

Anyway, there was a real evil beaver. It lived in a creek in Martinez, CA and dismantled people's bikes at night. Gary Bogue and I once went to find it but we did not bring it back to the newsroom.

Spoiler for future episodes, but we did a Lost parody miniseries where @greggrunberg.bsky.social was kind enough to reprise his role as the original pilot. He did a "Theme From Shaft" bit with @bayareadata.press' mom which put her two degrees from Kevin Bacon.
