Saw the Oscar nominations announcement earlier this morning. Beyond excited for Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Ryan Coogler, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor and the crews behind Elio and Zootopia 2.

I don’t think there’s ever been somebody who seems more uncomfortable watching movies than Richard Brody.
January 22, 2026 at 9:10 PM
Most of my comfort movies are the usual staples such as Paddington 2, The Bishop‘s Wife, What’s Up, Doc? and The Princess Bride. But I also have Total Recall (1990), Matilda (1996), Death Becomes Her and Burn After Reading.

I also find myself wanting to call Return to Oz a comfort movie.
I think it’s totally normal to have a comfort movie that, to an outsider, seems like irrevocably fucked up selection.

Congrats to Delroy Lindo for his Oscar nomination for his fantastic acting performance in Crooklyn…I mean Sinners!

Mother Tucker’s. (Yes! That was really the name.) They had the best chicken strip platter when I was a kid and the fries were nice and golden, covered with a mild seasoning. Yum!
My parents loved their pasta/stir-fry bar.

Please come back MT’s! I beg of you.

One of my favourite animated movies of all time! 🐱
January 15, 2026 at 4:23 AM
I liked One Battle After Another quite a bit, especially Chase Infiniti and Benicio del Toro, not to mention the “Dirty Work” needle drop. But rethinking about them months after seeing both movies, I’ve got to say Sinners > OBAA.

Pushing myself to write some more reviews, since liking George of the Jungle (1997), Muppets from Space (1999) and Trap (2024) already esteems me as a genuine movie critic.
listen you have to like some bad movies if you’re a genuine movie critic so you’re not just looking around making sure you have consensus opinions with everyone else — take some swings! have your own taste!
My favorite critics always have a handful of "brother, what the fuck are you talking about?" level opinions, real passion that comes out of left field for absolute dogwater, that they are not only willing but able to defend to the point where they almost win you over.

My New Year’s resolution is to get more people to watch Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023).

I have to rewatch that one. I saw it for the first time about three years ago. Have you seen The Talk of the Town (1942), the film that inspired it? It’s more dramatic, but it’s also got some funny repartee.

Fun fact: Celine originally wanted to sing “When I Fall in Love” with the late, great Warren Wiebe, the anthem singer for Los Angeles Kings home games.

Yes! Please do watch this movie. It’s one of my all-time favourites and is a beautiful story of a multigenerational family and their trials and tribulations. The top-notch ensemble cast is a bonus.:
I’m watching this for the first time. Not just to ogle Aidan Quinn but it’s a perk. #TCMParty #Avalon

My Favorite Year (1982)

It’s sadly been relegated to the sidelines of great ‘80s comedies, but I think that it’s one of the best.
