Greetings, new followers who aren't bots!

Brief synopsis:

I'm a nerdy event planner with fantasies of writing or arting full time if I were to ever win the lotto. I'm allergic to the sun (THE SUN!!!) and am a delicate alpine flower who would REALLY love to live above the 50th parallel...
Hey, it's me! Without a hat and scarf and mask on! (Because I was not a) indoors in a public place, or b) outside, where the SUN and pollen live) I'm your average Pasty White Girl with hair that's been going all Rogue From X-Men for awhile. Volume depends upon the humidity level... I'm wearing a cool black tshirt with a Ouija board pattern on it in this photo, but I have a vast (VAST) collection of nerdy tshirts, many of which involve dinosaurs, Star Wars, or Star Trek.

UPDATE!

I hid behind the house to block out the street lights and all the lights of downtown Indianapolis, and was able to pick up a slight pink glow to the northeast (with the camera).

Tomorrow, if it comes back, I'm going to drive to a slightly darker location.

Looking up from behind a house (facing ENE), a light pink rippled glow can be seen over the house next door. To the left, there appears to be a green glow above/around a puffy tree, but it is not clear as to whether it is also aurora or just light pollution.

In a large (9") wooden embroidery hoop with black fabric, a large tree is being embroidered. The trunk and branches, done with single threads of three different shades of brown together, start wide at the bottom and narrow toward the top. The tips of the branches between 12:00 and 3:00 have tiny green leaves made with clusters of single stitches emerging from a single point in a fan-like pattern.

I got a message from parking ops that I had to move my car or it would be towed, because they were closing the parking lot. So, now I am parked about a half mile away from my building.

At least I got to take a lovely walk in the snow.

Seriously, if you have a Sikh gurdwara in your area please let people know about this. We have at least one here in Detroit Metro that I know of. Bonus is that Sikhs are, on the whole, extremely rad people.

Folks, if you are hungry, please contact your local Sikh gurdwara. Or just show up for langar, which most gurdwaras do several times a week, for a free meal. Lots also do weekly or monthly drives giving out groceries.

No conversion necessary. Feeding anyone who is hungry is a key part of Sikhism.

In addition to cracking walnuts and meeting up with some folks to discuss grants, I finished planting my mini-daffodil and (springtime) crocus bulbs before everything freezes tomorrow night, and also put the garden to bed for the year.

I cracked some of the walnuts I collected last week. I only got a third of the way through the bag, but I think I've improved my technique. Look! They look so cool!

The meat of a black walnut - with nearly all the shell removed, save for a little bit on the bottom. The contents are in one piece (so far)! It kind of looks like two sets of lungs (or two human pelvises?) back to back. There are subtle stripes on the brown membrane covering the walnutty goodness. Overhead view of a walnut that I nearly got out of the shell in one piece! (Until I removed the last bit of shell on the bottom...) We're looking straight down - and it looks like two mirrored hemispheres, each with a sort of... roundish triangular lobe on each side of a central bit that kind of looks like a vertebra. The nut is perched atop the fantastic gizmo designed specifically for cracking black walnut shells (which, after diamonds, are the hardest substance known to man. This may or may not be hyperbole.)

The canopy is made from knots of assorted sizes and color blends, giving it a three-dimensional effect. The trunk, which also looks three-dimensional, is done with longer, vertical stitches in brown thread. A side angled view of a small embroidered autumnal tree on black fabric. The camera seems to have focused on a point somewhere in the middle of the "leaves" (made of knots of assorted sizes and color blends), leaving the trunk (made with long, vertical stitches in brown) out of focus. From this angle, it is obvious that the piece has a 3D look, with some little clusters of knots (as well as the trunk) sticking out higher than the rest of the piece.

Update!

I still need to build out some of the spots to give it more dimension.

The trunk is made of long vertical stitches in brown, and it looks three-dimensional. The leaves on the tree are made up of knots, in a variety of autumnal colors. Close inspection reveals that every set of colors is actually a blend of at least two different shades of embroidery floss, sometimes three.

This fall has been an extra slow one for small businesses out here, and the tea house is $3.7k shy of where we need to be to make rent before late fees hit this month.

A square raised garden bed lined with chicken wire mesh and filled with dirt. About three dozen light purple crocus blossoms in varying stages of opening stand out against the soil. A little more difficult to see are all of the tufts of dark green grass-like leaves. The chicken wire mesh top is pulled back and up, exposing most of the bed. Closeup of two light purple flowers with soft white stripes in a pattern reminiscent of a fountain or an ostrich plume as they spread out toward the outer edges of the petals. From the dark purple center of each are sprouting three pollen-covered stamens and reddish orange filaments of the saffron spice (the latter of which has slide in between petals, so the threads are hidden, poking out from below, and just in general hiding. Some of the dark green grass-like leaves spray out from below them. At the bottom, some of the chicken wire mesh lining is sticking up.

In a 4-inch wooden embroidery hoop, a patch of moss and lichen created entirely of french knots. The outer edge is thick and pillowy kelly green, and within that, there are smaller patches made from assorted shades of green, brown, and grey, in assorted thicknesses. (Anything from two threads all the way up to six threads - sometimes solid color, ssometimes a blend of colors.) If you could reach through the screen and touch it, it would feel soft and bumpy, with several different textures.

A square-shaped raised garden bed full of soil, with a couple dozen light purple crocus blossoms scattered throughout. There are also multiple tufts of dark green grass-like leaves. The chicken wire cover is pulled back and away. I'm finding it interesting how varied the stages of bloom are for the flowers before they decide they're done. Some look barely open, but start to wilt after a day. Some last for a few days, and just keep spreading wider and wider! Closeup of a light purple saffron crocus. Its inverted teardrop-shaped petals have white patterns on them that remind one of a fountain or an ostrich plume - widening out as they move toward the tips. In the darker purple center, three yellow pollen-covered stamens and three longer reddish orange saffron filaments burst out of the flower like... idunno, some weird space alien giving you a jump scare! A spray of dark green grass-like leaves (each with a thin white stripe down the centerline) frame the blossom like a starburst from behind. And, behind THAT, there are several more tufts of leaves just starting to spread out of their protective sheaths. A slightly out of focus extreme closeup of a light purple saffron flower with plume-like art nouveau stripes emerging from the narrow bases of the petals and spreading out at the outer edges. There are some dark green grass-like leaves (each with a single white stripe down its midline) next to the flower and poking out from behind/underneath it. In the center of the flower are three yellow curly pollen-covered stamens and one visible, longer reddish orange saffron filament (with some yellow pollen dusting the frilly end) stick out. There are little bits of yellow pollen dusting a couple of the petals. And... in the center, slightly on top of the stamens, there is a BEE sleeping face down into the fluted center of the blossom!!! Today's harvest - on the right, a clear plastic tray (meant to be put under a flower pot) filled with plucked light purple crocus blooms. Some are looking rather tatty. [These will be dried and added to tea!!!] On the left, a white paper towel with today's haul of saffron - a small pile of reddish-orange filaments about 2x3cm. To the left of that, yesterday's saffron harvest. Its filaments are darker red, and MUCH thinner and smaller than the freshly plucked ones.

Around the outside is puffy and kelly green. Within that, there is a meandering trail of brown, with lighter green puffs. In the center is light yellow-green made with single knots using a single thread of embroidery floss. (If you're not an embroidery person, your standard floss has 6 strands to it that you can separate or use together.) In that section, there is a small trail of grey vaguely cup-like puffs. The bottom 2-ish cm of the piece is unfinished, and just empty black fabric. The silver sewing needle is stuck through the fabric outside the hoop at 1:00. I was laid off from Teen Vogue this week, alongside multiple other phenomenal team members.

At our Summit, I was asked how it felt to be 1 of 2 Black women left and what that meant for representation. Now, there are no Black women at Teen Vogue and that is incredibly painful to think about.

thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.
